[Bb] Hi, I'm Don Rusnak from Arlington, Virginia.
I've been playing the banjo since the 60s
_ _ _ _ and I'd like to demonstrate _ a style _ where the thumb takes the dominant role in hitting
the melody notes.
And it's similar to what a climber banjo player would get with a down
stroke.
[G] But the thumb _ _ takes the melody and then bounces up to the fifth string [Eb] _ [N] and the
middle finger _ _ drones on the first string.
And on occasion, [G] _ the thumb comes into play
and does a double thumb _ _ _ like this. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ And then also, _ there's a style [B] where the index finger
_ _ does the same thing as the thumb and you can either brush up _ _ on the _ _ second part or hit a
single string.
So it would be melody note _ and then strum _ _ and then the fifth string.
_ _ Or single
string melody [G] note _ _ and then [C] another single string for the upstroke _ _ and droning the fifth string.
[G] So
it would be either _ [C] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ similar to the _ _ _ effective claw hammer and you can also [G] bring your thumb down for
double thumb.
[C] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Cm] _ Sometimes I use _ those two styles in [B] _ [C] the same song.
_ I'm in a little different tuning
where _ I'm _ [Ab] _ _ [C] droning _ _ _ the first string, same note as the second.
So it's G, C, G, C, C.
G, C, G, C, C.
_ _ _ _ _ [G] So I'll demonstrate the thumb first and I'll try to bring in the index finger if I'm lucky.

_ _ _ _ I forgot
to tell you about this.
Sometimes I do an accent strum. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
I just bring it down.
_ _ And sometimes I use
my index finger comes [G] down in for a forward roll.
It's not bluegrass but it just happens to fall down
in there.
[C] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ And I bring my middle finger down for a _ [Cm] brush stroke down just for accent to give me a
breather. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [C] _ _ And I sometimes bring my thumb up _ _ _ just for accent. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ And also, _ over the years, [Fm] I've just
_ started to bounce [Cm] my thumb up. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ Just incorporating all those little right-hand techniques can add
some flavor to the tune. _ _
This tune is Darling Cory.
So it sounds, I'm not going to bore you with all
the whole, I've got a terrible voice anyway. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ Wake [D] up, wake up, darling Cory.
What [C] makes you sleep so slow?
All the revenue officers [D] come in.
[C] _ _
Gonna tear your still house down. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ Sometimes I do a triplet where I just _ start on
a string melody _ and then I do a 5-2-1 _ _ and then end up on that same string. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ I might not do that all
the way through but that's just a right-hand technique you can throw in there. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Combining
all those right-hand techniques adds a lot of little flavors to your tunes.
[Cm] _ _ [D] And that's about
it.
Any questions?
I'm Don Rustec from Arlington, Virginia.

collect [F] banjos.
[Fm] _ _
[Cm] _ And hope to see you.
Thanks.
