[C] Hey [A] everybody, this is [D] Stu.
So [B] glad you're [C] here.
Today we're going to have a really good time learning some [A] ragtime [D] fingerstyle.
[G] We're going to be playing a [C] song that Robert Johnson made famous,
[F] Hot Tamales and [F#] the Red Hot.
[C] And [A] I'll be breaking down [D] exactly what I'm [G] doing,
[C] also [A] doing [D] some [G] easier versions [C] of this,
[A]
[D] [G] [C] [Am] in just one [C] second.
[Am] Thank [C] you so much for joining me.
My name is Stu Fuchs.
This is [A]

If you're enjoying [D] the videos I'm putting up here,
hope [G] you'll click the subscribe button, [C] give this video a thumbs up,
and share it with your friends on social [C#] media.
You know, what we're going to [C] do here [D] is, you can strum through this [C] song.
[G] Of course, later on I'm going to be giving much more [C] emphasis to the fingerpicking patterns.
I'm going to be showing you two [F] fingerstyle patterns that you can use with this song.
[F#] And, as usual, if you would [C] like to support this channel on Patreon,
you'll be able [A] to receive a downloadable PDF [D] of this lesson,
with all the fingerstyle, [E] all [G] notated out [C] for you.
The chords you need for Hot Tamales and the Red Hot, pretty easy stuff.
C major, [A]
A7, then [D] D7,
[G] G7, [C] and C.
Now a couple of tricks I like to do.
C, when I [A] go to A7, you can [C#] slide up to this A7.
[C] That A7 is exactly the same shape as a G7, moved up to the 4th and 3rd and [Em] 4th fret.
Afterwards, [C] [D] I move to [G] D7, [C] G7, and C, just like before.
The other chords you'll need are C7, [F] F major, F [F#] sharp diminished 7th.
Now, F sharp diminished 7th sounds like a mouthful, but it's really [A] not as hard as you think.
G major, you take that shape, move it up to these strings.
So that's 2nd fret, [F#] 3rd fret, 2nd fret, and then just drop your pinky right there.
And then we use the diminished 7th trick, where you move up 1, 2, 3 frets.
And that is another [Fm] way to play F sharp diminished 7th.
[C] So when you put it all in context, it sounds like this.
1, 2, strum along with me.
Hot tamales in [A] the red hot [Am]
[G] Yes, she got them [C] for sale
Hot tamales in the [A] red hot [D] Yes, she got [G] them for sale
[C] Well, my little gal, she's ten foot tall [F] Sleeps in the kitchen [F#] with her feet in the [C] hall
Hot tamales [A] in the red hot [D] [G] Yes, she got them [C] for sale
[A] [D] I mean it, [G] yes, she got them [C] for sale
Now, we're going to move on to the fingerstyle in just a moment, but take a look at what I did when I moved from C,
and I moved my way down to A7, just [A] walking [C] down that high string, [A#m] making [A] that melodic variation.
So now let's play it with fingerstyle.
I'm going to show you two patterns.
Now the first fingerstyle pattern we're going to learn is a really important one.
Everybody should learn this [C] inside -outside.
Okay, so I'm using the thumb and the index on the inside strings, 3 and 2,
and my thumb and the middle on the outside strings, 4 and 1.
You want to tap your foot with the thumb.
Okay, I'm making some noise with my foot so it's real clear, but you could just tap your toe lightly.
This is all tabbed out in the PDF that's available at the Patreon post.
Take a listen.
Hot tamales [A] in the red hot [D] [G] Yes, she got them [C] for sale
Hot [G] tamales [Em] in the red [F#] hot Yes, she got them [G] for sale
[C] The second pattern is a bit more complex.
Let me break it down for you, but first I'm going to play.
[A]
[D] [G]
[C]
Now what I'm doing is I'm beginning this with pinching the outer strings.
Index, thumb.
Just get that first part.
It's half of the pattern.
Pinch, index, thumb.
Pinch, index, thumb.
This is all tabbed out on the Patreon PDF that's available for download.
Pinch, index, thumb.
Follow that by middle, thumb, index, thumb.
Middle, thumb, index, thumb.
So once again, the first part is pinch, index, thumb, and then follow it with middle, thumb, index, thumb.
Easier to play it than say it.
Pinch, index, thumb.
Middle, thumb, index.
Now let's play through the whole thing.
Notice how I'm going to bring out the middle finger to bring some syncopation,
and I will also palm mute, letting this part of the palm just touch the strings a little bit to bring out a little bit more thump in the bass.
One, two, three, four.
Hot tamales [A] in the red hot [G#]
[C] Yes, she got them for sale
Hot tamales [A] in the red hot [F#]
Yes, she got [G] them for sale
[C]
I got a gal, she's ten foot [F] tall Sleeps in the kitchen with her feet [A] in the [C] hall
Hot tamales in [A] the red hot [F#]
[G] Yes, she got [Am] them for sale
[A] I mean [Am]
it, [G] yes, she got [C] them for sale
Hot tamales in [A] the red [D] hot [B] Yes, she [C] got them for sale
Hot tamales in [A] the red hot [F#]
Oh, yes, she [B] got them for sale
[C]
Two for a nickel, got four for a [F] dime I'd sell you some, but they [G#] ain't none of [D#] [C] mine
Hot [A] tamales in the red hot [Am]
[G] Yes, she got [Am] them for sale
I mean it, [D] [G] yes, she got [C] them for sale
One more!
Hot tamales in [A] the red hot [D]
[G] Yes, she got them [C] for sale
Hot tamales [A] in the red [D] hot Yes, she [Bm] got them for sale
[B] Well, [C]
[Am] women are from Venus, men are from Mars Kiss [G#] my lips, baby, I see [F#] stars
[C]
Hot [A] tamales in the red [Am] hot [Bm] Yes, she got [C] them for sale
[A] I mean [D] it, [G] yes, she got them [C] for sale [A] I mean [Am] it, [G] yes, she [C] got them for [A] sale
I mean [D] it, [G] yes, she got them [C] for sale
So as you can see, you can make up your own words.
That's not only the folk process for every song, but [N] these old ragtime songs very often had a repeating chorus
and then there'd be one line where you can hear all these different artists throughout time and history
substitute and swap different verses, sometimes being spontaneous about it like I just was
or something that has just been passed down for generations.
So there's no one right way or wrong way to play these songs.
So thank you so much for being here.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson.
If you did, I hope you'll give this video a thumbs up, click the subscribe button,
and please share this video with your friends on social media, your different ukulele clubs and all that good stuff.

Hot tamales in [A] the red hot [Am]

Okay, so I'm using the thumb and the index on the inside strings, 3 and 2,
and my thumb and the middle on the outside strings, 4 and 1.
You want to tap your foot _ with the thumb. _ _ _
Okay, I'm making some noise with my foot so it's real clear, but you could just tap your toe lightly. _ _ _
This is all tabbed out in the PDF that's available at the Patreon post.
Take a listen.
Hot tamales [A] in the red hot _ [D] _ [G] Yes, she got them [C] for sale _ _ _
Hot _ [G] tamales [Em] in the red _ [F#] hot Yes, she got them [G] for sale
_ _ [C] _ The second pattern is a bit more complex.
Let me break it down for you, but first I'm going to play.
_ _ _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ _ [D] _ _ _ [G] _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Now what I'm doing is I'm beginning this with pinching the outer strings.
_ _ _ Index, thumb.
Just get that first part.
It's half of the pattern. _
Pinch, index, thumb.
_ _ Pinch, index, thumb.
This is all tabbed out on the Patreon _ _ PDF that's available for download.
Pinch, index, thumb.
_ _ Follow that by _ middle, thumb, index, thumb.
_ Middle, thumb, index, thumb.
So once again, the first part is pinch, index, thumb, and then follow it with _ middle, thumb, index, thumb.
Easier to play it than say it.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ Pinch, index, thumb.
Middle, thumb, index. _ _ _
Now let's play through the whole thing.
Notice how I'm going to bring out the middle finger to bring some syncopation,
and I will also _ palm mute, letting this part of the palm just touch the strings a little bit to bring out a little bit more thump in the bass.
One, two, three, four.
Hot tamales [A] in the red hot [G#] _

Hot tamales [A] in the red hot [F#] _

I mean [D] it, [G] yes, she got them [C] for sale _
So as you can see, you can make up your own words.
_ That's not only the folk process for every song, but [N] these old ragtime songs very often had a repeating chorus
and then there'd be one line where you can hear all these different artists throughout time and history _
substitute and swap different verses, sometimes being spontaneous about it like I just was
_ or something that has just been passed down for generations.
So there's no one right way or wrong way to play these songs.
