Start Jamming...
Aloha, Clowns and Growns, I'm Dream Guerrero and welcome to Whiteboard Request.
I know we haven't done one of these in a long time, but this song, Cake by the Ocean, has
been stuck in my head forever.
So what's the best thing that I can do?
Is I can teach it to you folks so it gets stuck in your heads.
Alright, so we're going to follow the same format.
We're going to show you the chords for this song, come up with this drumming pattern,
and show you a nice little picking that you can do.
Alright, so first off, it's the chords.
First chord we're going to play is an E minor chord, one of four chords you're going to
need for this song.
So E minor starts off with your pointer finger, A string, second fret, middle finger, E string,
third fret, ring finger, C string, fourth fret.
So this is what I like to call the staircase.
It looks like a staircase.
Next up, the wall, B minor 7.
Pointer finger, you're going to bar the second fret, B minor [D] 7.
[Bm] [Am]
Next one is an A minor, so middle finger, G string, second fret.
I call this one [B] the so easy, because sometimes if you play an A minor 7, which is just [C] nothing,
you get the same kind of sound.
That's why I call it so easy that you don't even need hands to play it.
Next up is your C chord, ring finger, A string, third fret.
This is what I like to call basic, because this should have been the first chord that
you learn on the instrument.
So we got [Em] staircase, E minor, we [D] got wall, B minor 7, [Am] then we got too easy or so easy,
[C]
and we got pretty [E] easy, or whatever I called [C] it earlier, the C chord.
So [D] E minor, B minor 7, [C] A minor, and C.
Pretty simple, [N] it's a lot of fun, and all you need
to learn are these four chords right here.
Next up, we'll pair it up with a nice strumming pattern so you can strum these chords and start singing.
So we broke it down right here.
Notice that I've put down your strumming, that down, down, up, down, down, up, down,
up.
So I've put some lines in between, and what that is, it's we're separating these as three different groups.
So the strumming pattern sounds like this, so you guys can get a nice gist of what it sounds like.
It goes down, down, up, down, down, up, down, up, down, down, up, down, down, up, down,
down, down, up, down, down, down.
So that first down is pretty prominent, it stands by itself, so down.
And then you follow that up with down, up, down, up.
So down, down, up, down, down, up.
If we move over to the side, we're going to do another down, and do down, up, down, up.
So it goes down, down, up, down, up.
Down, down, up, down, up.
Down, down, down, up.
Okay?
So if we put these together, down, down, up, down, down, up, down, up, down, [G] down, up,
down, [D] down, up, [F] down, down, up, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, [N] down,
Now here's the tricky part, chord changes.
Now we're going to add a chord to the first part right here, so these first two.
So we're going to play E minor right here, and we're going to use the second chunk of
our strumming pattern for our B minor 7.
So E minor for these first three strums, and then the rest of it B minor 7.
So it's going to sound like [Em] this.
[D]
[Em] So it just sounds like [D] [Em]
[F#m] [Em] [D] [C]
[D] [Em] down, [F#] down, up, down, down, up, down, up, E [D] minor, B minor [Em] 7.
[Bm] [C]
[D] [Em] [Am]
Alright, same thing with your A minor and C.
A minor for these first three strums, and then C for the rest of the strums.
So down, [C] down, up, down, [Am] down, up.
[C] [Am]
[C] Now if we put all four [Em] together, it sounds like this.
[Bm] [Am] [C]
[D] [Am] [C]
[Em] And since that's pretty much the entire song, just play these four chords over and over.
You can play the song if you know how to sing it, but if you want to get down to the gist,
we also have the picking pattern tabbed out for you.
I know I don't do too much tabs, but this is one of those special cases where tabs help
really nicely when teaching it to you folks.
So A, E, C, G, just like normal tabs.
We got four right here, so we're going to play C string fourth fret.
And guess what?
We're just going to do the staircase right there, because the staircase
E minor is going to be this next section of our picking.
So 0, 4, 3, 2 makes up our E minor chord.
So when you play that, play the fourth fret on the C string, and then strum down on the E minor.
Play the C string fourth fret again, so it sounds like this.
Okay?
From there you're going to hit four A string second frets.
Okay?
So 2, 2, 2, 2, so four of them.
So it sounds like this.
And then [C] hit 1, then 0, [Am] [Em]
[Am] [Em]
[Am] [Em] [Am]
and strum down on your A minor to 0, 0, 0.
Too easy.
Play 0, and then four times on the third [C] fret, and end it [Em] on 2.
So you have
[Am] [C]
[Em] [A#m]
[Am] [C]
[Am] [Em]
[Am] [Em] [Am]
[C] [Em] Alright, so that's pretty much the funnest part of this song.
You got your chords, you got your strumming pattern, and you got your nice picking pattern.
So go ahead, jam this song, get this song stuck in your other friend's heads.
