[Gb] With his third [A] studio album, Pure Comedy, landing [G] on countless best of lists in [Gm] 2017,
it can be [Dm] seemingly hard to ignore the [F] presence of one of indie rock's most polarizing figures,
Father John Misty.
[Bb] [D] [Gm] To understand [F] Father John Misty, it's [Bb] best to look back to where he came from.
In 1981, [G] Joshua Michael Tillman [G] was born into a religious household in Rockville, Maryland,
[Em] in the suburbs of Washington, [C] D.C.

In his 20s, Josh [Em] Tillman began to stray away from his family and religious upbringing.
He [A] released eight records under the name Jay Tillman, [Am] and spent years touring with
Fleet Foxes as their drummer.
In an interview with the [G] Chicago Tribune, Josh [C] said,
And I wanted to prove [G] myself prematurely that I was [E] a serious artist [A] and distance myself
from how I [Am] grew up.
I was catering to an archetype, [E] to some sort of cowboy [G] myth of what I wanted to be in my head.
I [Em] was just stuck in this [F] one, just this [E] one idea, you know, like those Jay Tillman records,
[D] they're all just [E] kind of re-articulations of the same sort of idea.
[A] In [D] 2010, he experienced [C] a loss of self-identity while on an [F] intense psychedelic trip.
He immediately left Fleet Foxes and moved to LA [Bb] to write a novel.
While working on the novel, [F] he discovered a new voice, a voice that more accurately
[Bb] reflected his true character.
This transformation was [C] personified when he undertook the moniker Father John [F] Misty.
Under the new [F] alias, he released his debut album, Fear Fun, which featured a song inspired
by the novel he wrote in LA, entitled I'm Writing a Novel.
[Bb] The album has a much different sound from any of his previous work, replacing slow and
somber tunes [Am] with something more exciting and engaging.
[F]
By the [Gbm] time his second project, I Love You Honey Bear, was released in 2015, Father John
Misty had made [Abm] waves in the indie rock [Gbm] community for being an outspoken lyricist and performer.
His [D] new record was personal, humorous, [Gbm] sweet, and cynical.
The album cover, I think, is sort of the best illustration of what's happening, [F] kind of
numbing my self-awareness and [Db] just trying to make sense of who I [Gbm] was strictly through
what [D] strangers told me about [E] myself, but more specifically, like the facade that I was giving [B] them.
[Ebm] [E]
[Abm] [F]
[E] [Gb] [Ab] In 2017, Father John Misty released his most controversial [A] effort to date, Pure Comedy.
From front to back, Pure Comedy is an uncensored critique on the [Am] entertainment industry and
consumer culture at large.
It forces us to look at the ugliest parts of humanity from a perspective outside of our own.
The [A] idea of the record, I guess, is [Gb] going from [A] narcissism to consciousness.
And I think [Am] narcissism is, like, with these themes of our absurdity and the futility of
[Dbm] asking these questions like, is progress even [A] possible or do we just satirize ourselves
when we [Am] try to, you know, do we just make ourselves more absurd?
On the title track, Pure Comedy, [A] Tillman points out that unlike other species, humanity relies
on culture to dictate our thoughts and behavior.
[Am]
[A] [Ab] The album was met with universal acclaim, and a man who was struggling to find his voice
only a few years [E] prior is now a commercial [A] success.
His latest album, [F] God's Favorite Customer, appears to be a much more self-reflective project.
With [Ab] singles like Mr.
Tillman [C] and Just Dumb Enough to Try, [F] we get a glimpse into [Bbm] Tillman's
head and find out what he [C] thinks of himself.
Please [F] welcome Father [Bb] John Misty.
[F] Mr.
[Ab] Tillman, good to see [F] you again.
There's a [Bbm] few [C] outstanding charges just [F] before we check [Bb] you in.
Let's see [F] here.
Father [Ab] John Misty isn't afraid [C] to make people feel uncomfortable.
He writes from a [Bb] perspective beyond [Em] his own, allowing the listener [C] to think about the bigger picture.
He does [Am] this in a way that he never could as Jay Tillman.
In order to find his true voice, he had to become somebody new.
