UPDATED! Monster Ukulele FINGERPICKING Tutorial For Beginners- ADVENTURE TIME DISTANT LANDS OBSIDIAN chords
Start Jamming...
Hi friends!
Today we're going to be doing an updated tutorial for the song The Monster
from Adventure Time Distant Lands.
I have an original tutorial that was uploaded
based on the demo that was released before the episode came out, but now that the episode is out,
I wanted to do an updated tutorial on that version, the version that's in the episode.
I wanted to give you guys a couple of options for this version, so I'm going to be showing you
a strumming pattern option and then also a finger picking option, and we will get into those later.
So let's start out with our chords.
First we're going to need the chords G, [B] B7, [Em] E minor,
[C] and C.
And this is all standard GCEA tuning, you [B] shouldn't have to retune your uke,
and you don't need a capo for this version.
Yay!
Okay, so we have our chords.
Let's go ahead and
learn [G] the general strumming pattern for this whole song.
So that strumming pattern is going
to be, I'm just going to play it on G.
Down, down, up, up, down, up, down, down, up, up, down, up,
down, down, up, up, down, up, down, down, up, up, down, up.
[N] So that was down, down, up, up, down, up.
And you're going to play that once per chord.
So if I go through that progression of G, B7,
E minor, and then C, it's going to sound [G] like this.
Down, down, up, up, [B] down, up, down, down, up, up, [Em] down, up, down, down, up, up, down, [C] up, down, up, down, up, up, down.
[Db] I'll do that again, but this time we'll say the chord [G] names as I go through them.
So we have G,
[B]
B7, B [Em] minor, [C] C.
So if we apply that strumming pattern, that down down up, up down up, to
the verses in the middle with the lyrics, it's going to sound like this.
But [G] don't beat yourself up on [B] me.
It wasn't just the [Em] sound that I was hiding [C] from.
I messed up [B] if you don't know what you've got to live [Em] for.
I'm so scared that I'm not [C] good enough.
Always felt [G] like a monster.
[B] You were long [Em] before I was big.
[C] And what we see is [G] a need.
[B] That's to say I'm [Em] used to being [G] alone.
[B] And we heard that.
I'm not used to [C] good problems.
I'm not used to [G] having a use for [B] that.
But I could have [Em] used it.
[C]
[G] So that's a pretty big chunk, so go ahead and play that back as many times as you need
to get that down.
For the chorus at the beginning and at the end, the one that goes,
I know we'll never grow old together,
cause you'll never grow old to me, the one we all know,
you're just going to play down strums.
So one strum per chord.
So that's going to sound like this.
I know we'll [B] never grow old [Em] together.
[C] Cause you'll never grow old to [G] me.
You're the pink in my [B] cheeks and I'm scared,
[Em] cause that means I'm a little bit [C] soft.
[Ab] And then from there, you're going to start that strumming pattern
when you go into the verses.
So we have that strumming pattern.
Now, here's an alternative, slightly more difficult version.
And that's going to be with finger picking.
The rhythm is going to be the same, but you're going to pluck
your thumb, middle finger, and ring finger.
So that's [G] 1, 3, and 4.
You're going to pluck those, and then pluck your first finger.
So it's going to go all 3 and then 1.
And the rhythm of that is going to be,
that's the same rhythm as the down, down, up, up, down, up.
But now you're just alternating, you're plucking for that.
So down, down, up, up, down, up.
Is kind of what it feels like.
So once again, that's going to be the same for each chord.
One of those progressions for each chord.
So going through that progression with the finger picking,
it sounds like this.
[B]
[Em] [C]
[N]
Both of those are accurate for the song.
You can choose between the strumming or the finger picking,
depending on your skill level and what you feel like doing.
Taking that finger picking and once again applying it to the verses,
that's going to sound like this.
But [G] don't beat yourself up, I [Eb] wasn't just [Em] a son that I was [C] hiding.
[G] [Eb] And you don't know how to live, and I'm [Em] so scared that I'm not good.
And [C] it felt like [G] you came
[Eb] along before I [Em] was [C] big.
And you've seen us, you [G] [Eb] say I'm [Em] used to [C] [G]
this.
[Eb] It only hurt me [Em] back.
Loving you's a good problem to have.
And I'm [G] used to that, [Eb] but I could get used [Em] to this.
[C] [G] I'm used to that, [Eb] but I could get used [Em] to this.
[C]
[G] [Gb] And once again for that finger picking part,
you're just going to be doing down strums on the first chorus and the last chorus.
Or if you don't feel like strumming, you don't want to move your hand,
you can just pluck each string.
Going 1, 2, 3, 4.
But really quick.
Which it just [Eb] kind of sounds like a strum.
It doesn't matter either way.
For our play along today, I'm going to be doing just the strumming pattern,
but I will also have a cover up that has the plucking pattern
if you want to play along with that one.
You can just click over here, maybe it's over here,
somewhere up here [G] for that.
Okay, and I think we're ready to do our play along now, so let's go.
I know we'll [B] never grow old together.
[Em] [C] Cause you'll never grow old to [G] me.
You're pink in my [B] cheeks and I'm scared,
Cause that [Em] means I'm a little [C] bit soft.
Don't beat [G] yourself up on [B] me.
Wasn't your [Em] self blind that I was hiding?
[C]
[G] I'm still [B] [Em] scared that I'm not good [C] enough.
Always [G] felt like a monster.
[B]
Long before [Em] I was this.
[C] Yeah, I can't [G] seem to get over the monster.
[B] Let's [Em] just say I'm used to the [C]
[G] tough.
Cause love, [B] it only hurt me [Em] bad.
But loving [C] you's a good problem to [G] have.
And I'm used to [C] that, [B] but I could get [Em] used to this.
[C] [G] I'm used to [B] that, but I could [Em] get used to this.
[C]
[G] I know we'll never [B] grow old [Em] together.
[C] Cause you'll never grow old to me.
[G] You're the pink in [B] my cheeks and I'm scared,
Cause that [Em] means I'm a little bit [C] soft.
[G] You're the pink in [B] my cheeks and I [Em] love that it means
I'm a little [C] bit soft.
I'm a [G] little bit soft.
[N]
