[B] I grew up in Canada, in rural Ontario, in a house [A] that was heated with just wood.
And [B] my family and I, we lived at the end of a really long dirt road with the [F] nearest neighbors miles away.
[Cm] And so in the evenings we'd go out for walks, my sister and my mom and dad and I.
[B] And we would look at the fireflies [F] that were along the side of the road.
But to us they weren't fireflies, because my parents had us convinced that they were fairies.
And they'd take us home and tuck us into bed.
And if we were lucky, [N] we would see one little fairy outside our [F#] window that was there to say [F] goodnight to us, our own personal guardian.
So it was a really magical childhood.
[A] But then you grow up and [B] you lose that magic.
And life gets hard.
And life got pretty hard for my family.
[F] My mom lost a battle with mental illness.
And she committed suicide about five years ago.
And something like that leaves a family with a lot of questions, more questions than answers.
And it leaves you kind of wondering how you're going to cope and make that a part of your psyche and still be a positive person.
[N] But songwriting, thank God, has a way of answering those questions for you [A] sometimes.
And bringing the magic back into things.
And that's what [N] happened with this song.
Because fireflies are not fairies anymore, obviously.
But they're not just fireflies either.
So [A] I wrote this with Emily Shackleton and Sarah Hayes.
It's called [F] Firefly.
[Cm]
Firefly, how do you keep [G] your light on?
Here in a dark [C] world, [Cm] I want to be alive like [A] you.
[F] In [Cm] that black sky, you're not afraid [G] of midnight.
You got a way [Am] of shining bright.
How [F] your sparks ignite.
[C] Maybe that's what life is all [G] about.
Finding faith in the shadow of your [Am] doubt.
You gotta shine, you gotta shine [F] your light.
[Dm] Just like a [C] firefly.
I'm wondering [G]
how bright it could [Am] be in this world full of broken and blown [F] up trees.
[C] I could just put in [G] a million, but I try to keep on believing [Am] in what heart's got enough.
[F]
Just enough.
[C] Maybe that's what life is all [G] about.
Faith in the shadow [Am] of your doubt.
You gotta shine [F] your light.
[C]
Shooting [G] star, don't try to hide it.
That's who [Am] you are.
