This version was the live version from Jing Chi live at Yoshi's.
complex and it is pretty complex, but [E] it's really built
note sticking and that three [Bb] note sticking is right, right,
So the first step is to [C] just play right, right, left and make sure you can get that up to speed.

_ Hey everybody, I'm Jim Linsner and right now I'm going to show you an [Fm] incredibly creative
groove that Vinnie Caluta played on the intro of the song Going Nowhere by Jing Chi.
[Gb] _ _
This version was the live version from Jing Chi live at Yoshi's.
[C] And this groove [Gb] sounds really complex and it is pretty complex, but [E] it's really built
on a very simple three note sticking and that three [Bb] note sticking is right, right,
left.
[Ab]
So the first step is to [C] just play right, right, left and make sure you can get that up to speed.
[Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _
[Db] _ The second step [D] is Vinnie accents the first rim click and then plays the second rim click
at a normal volume.
So play the pattern again and see if you can do that.
_ [Bb] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [D] Okay, next we're going to add the hi-hat with the left foot on the first right hand bell
note every time.
That sounds like this. _ _ _
[Db] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[F] _ _ Okay believe it or not, once you have that [Bb] pattern down, you have all the technical skills
to [C] be able to play the groove that Vinnie played on the intro [Gb] of Going Nowhere.
It's just that it's a little tricky because of the way it lays on the time.
You see, Vinnie [Bb] played the three [C] note grouping in [Bb] sixteenth notes and [E]
it's just, it's a little
freaky the way it lays on the [Bm] time.
So I'm going to take a step back [Gb] and play the rhythm he played and the sticking he played
[E] just on the pad and count it out loud so you can really [Gb] hear how it fits.
Okay, what [F] you're going to do is first you're going to play one and with [C] the right hand.
Then you're going to start the three [Cm] note sticking on beat two.
[Ab] You're going to keep the three note sticking going all the way through one [Fm] measure and
all the way through a second [Gb] measure up to four and.
Okay, here's what I mean.
[F] Three and four and [B]
one and two and a three and a four and a one and a two and a three
and [N] a four and a one and a two and [Gb] a three and a four and a one [F] and a two and a [D] three
and a four and. _
Wow, that's hard to do.
Okay, [Fm] once you can do that, [Bm] the next step is just [F] to play that on two different sound sources.
Right hand on the bell, left hand on the rim.
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ Now let's add in the bass drum.
The bass drum is going to play on the first two eighth notes [Gb] with the right hand and the
bass drum is also going to play on the last sixteenth of the second bar.
That sounds like this.
[Bb] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [D] _ _ Okay, now we're going to bring back accenting every other rim click.
Okay, this is a hard step so I'm going to take it a little bit slower. _
_ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[F] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Fm] Finally, we're just [Bb] going to add the hi-hat with the left foot.
Now [D] unfortunately, Vinny doesn't play the hi-hat every single time he plays that first right stroke.
[F] He plays [Bb] three [E] hi-hat notes, then he rests one.
Then he plays three more, then he rests two.
A little bit confusing but I [F] think you'll understand what I'm talking about as soon
as you hear me play it.

[Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ Okay, [N] then it's just a matter of getting that pattern up to speed.
Here's what it sounds like up to speed. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ Okay, that's it.
Going Nowhere, intro beat by Vinny Caliuta.
Listen to the rest of that song.
It's amazing.
He plays so many great things.
