Hey!
Now this band has the same lead singer as Tool.
I know
there is a load of Tool fans out there.
Hello to you all!
And he's got a super
interesting voice.
You'll have seen a couple of my Tool videos before.
I'll put
a little link up here but I want to see if he changes his style with this band.
And it's a live version.
I like live versions because I can hear the raw
[C#m] vocals instead of something that's [D] been mixed or [F#m] changed by a producer.
[C#m]
[D] [C#m]
[A] [Bm] [C#m]
[F#m] [C#m]
[B] He's doing some weird things which he definitely doesn't do with Tool.
Where he's placing his consonants is really forward in his mouth here
which is a really really unusual thing to do.
I've never heard anyone really
sing like that apart from in a cartoon character but it does sound [D] cool.
[A] [C#m] [G#]
[E] It's [F#] really at the [C#m] front of his mouth.
[F#m]
[B] [C#m] [B]
[D] [F#m] [C#m]
[A] [C#m]
[D] [F#m] [C#m]
[B] [A]
[B] [C#m]
[B] [C#m] [F#m] [A]
[G#m] [C#m] This is at a really easy point [A] of his range.
[C#m]
[D] [C#m]
[A] [Bm] [C#m]
[D] [F#m] [E] His placement is really forward but it's as if he's closing off his nasal passage,
moving his soft palate down.
I like all these creaks and he's adding, not riffs
really, more melismas.
Almost classical style movements on a minor scale rather
if it was a riff it would be more likely to be on a pentatonic scale.
[C#m] [B]
[C#m]
[B]
[F#m]
[C#m] [F#m]
[C#m] [D#]
[E] [F#m] [C#m] [F#m]
[C#m]
[B]
[F#m] [A]
[C#] [N] So the other guy singing has that classic thing of just as you get higher
having a bit more power.
Maynard has the thing of his range sounding exactly the
same the whole way up whether he's singing low or high.
So he's singing
these high harmonies and it just sounds really effortless.
The other guy, I'm
sorry I'm not sure of his name, but it sounds full and rocky.
Neither way is
wrong or right.
It's just a creative interpretation and dependent on the individual's voice.
[C#m]
[B]
[C#m] And I like that little bit of distortion he's got as well.
[B] [E] [A]
[B] [F#m] [B] [C#m]
[B] It's [F#] [E] [B]
[A] [B] [C#]
like the sort of music
you just [D] have to close your eyes and be [C#m] totally involved in.
[C#]
The sort of music
that you feel.
[C#m]
[C] [C#m]
[C#] [F#m]
[C#m]
[F#m] [C#m]
[Am] [G#m] I [C#m] love how the guitars keep on going to [F#m] weird places [C#] and
[A] [C#]
[D] [A]
[B] [A]
[F#m] actually these drums [A] are quite intense but [C#m] you [B] don't really notice.
[A] Suddenly
you're like, ah yeah, these drums [G#m] are kind of [C#m] holding it up.
[B]
[A] Like [D#] I love the fills.
[C#m] [B]
They feel kind of understated but they're [A] not [B] weird.
[C#m] I think it's tasteful.
[F#m]
[F#m] [A]
[C#m] [F#]
[C#] [F#m]
[C#] [D#] [E] [C#]
[B] [A]
[C#] [E]
[B] Really [A] close vowels.
It's almost like a closed mouth.
[C#m] [B]
[A]
[C#m] [B]
This higher stuff is good though [A] as well.
Very easy.
[C#m] [E]
[B] There's like A's and very well
mixed [A] as well.
Not pushed.
[E] Not a push test.
[C#] [E] [B]
[A]
[E] [C#] That's
[Fm] the sort of thing that would be amazing live if you were just in that
atmosphere and I don't think a recording can quite get it across.
I like the
harmonies.
I like that slightly more rocky voice and then the smooth voice as
well.
I think it worked really really well.
Thank you for watching.
I hope you
enjoyed.
