Vocal Coach Reacts to Kelly Clarkson & Ariana Grande - Santa, Can't You Hear Me chords
Start Jamming...
To get you into the Christmas spirit just [Eb] as much as I am, can you tell?
I'm going to be reacting to Kelly Clarkson and Ariana Grande singing
Santa Can You Hear Me.
[Gb] [B]
[Ebm] [E]
Love [G] that minor up top.
[B]
[Ebm] [E]
[G] Great vocal technique up top there on Kelly's part.
I'm not even sure
what word she's singing but the ma-ha-da, the placement of it is just brilliant.
It's
beautiful.
By the way, I love the period style here.
You've got this kind of like
vintage-y vibe going on with the way that the band is set up, the background singers,
what they're wearing, everything.
[Abm]
Love [Db] her shrug.
Kelly's purple beautiful [E] dress.
[Gb] So good.
Doesn't the bass player, it's not, but doesn't that bass player look like Eric Andre?
[B]
[Ebm] Love the harmonies there.
[E]
[Db] And then Ariana's doing
[B] up top.
Beautiful harmonies.
[G] Now that's [Abm] hard because you've got head into chest.
Big notes right there and it's
really difficult to go out of it from the head voice.
[B]
Wide open mouth vowels.
[Ebm] [E]
[Em] Yes!
[Abm]
[Db] [E]
[Gb] [B] I [N] find it very interesting the dichotomy of tonality between Kelly Clarkson and Ariana
Grande and it's really interesting how well they blend because Kelly is so beefy and big and
really heavy in her voice actually which is so powerful and robust and lovely and Ariana is so
light and airy and it's not thin but it's more like of this like ingenue kind of wilty
breathy quality right?
It's much more contemporary pop and yet when they sing their harmonies
together the breathiness from Ariana's voice and the heft from Kelly's voice make this beautiful
complimentary combination that I actually wouldn't have really thought would necessarily work but [B] it
really really does.
[Ebm]
It's like [F] Ariana's speaking to a little baby.
And Kelly's like keep those like she's just like telling you like do it you know and Ariana's like
kindly [Ebm] sweetly suggesting.
[E] But the [G] authority that Kelly's got man.
[Abm]
Love the background harmonies.
[Db] Hear [E]
[Gb] it?
Love the riff there.
So [B]
good!
Love that seventh harmony.
[Ebm] [E]
Love that.
[G] I think honestly that's the hardest part of the whole [N] song.
There's really to me
the registerical change from head to chest being that the chest is so high.
The saving grace is that it's on an o which you then can change the integrity of that vowel to an
ow yeah instead of an o but man if they didn't widen it out like look at how wide [G] Kelly's mouth
is here for the o.
[Em] You kind of really can't see because the mic is covering it but see if you can
[G]
[Eb] and Ariana's too right [N] but she's higher up and more of a chest mix but Kelly's doing the brunt
of that in the chest voice and you really have to be so wide if you were singing truly an o
it would crash and burn.
It's so throaty right but I mean it's got to be wide it's got to be
supported.
There's really no [B] grace there for that note unless it's perfectly placed.
[Ebm]
That drummer is [E] so in the pocket by the way.
Like really good drummer.
[Em]
The [Abm] background there too.
[Db]
[E] I love [Gb] Kelly's placement.
[B] Did [N] you just hear Ariana's
she's got such a high voice guys so effortlessly high that even when she's just playing around like
most people's woo would be like oh but hers is like it's [E] like she sucked in helium
[G] [D]
[Gb] gorgeous
tension
[B] [Ebm]
[E] [G]
[Abm] I like [Db]
that [E] [Gb]
dissonance there.
[B]
What's [Eb] your favorite Christmas song?
If you want to know what mine is my
all-time favorite Christmas song like nothing beats it
