Hi everyone.
Andy Davis here again from Master of Voice, a channel with reactions
to performers from across the world.
In this episode, another video featuring
Kelly Clarkson here on the channel.
This is her performance from a few weeks ago
at the Kennedy Center Honors as she performs a cover of Garth Brooks'
The Dance.
Let's jump right in.
Looking back on the memory of the dance we shared
beneath the stars above.
Nice!
For a moment, all the world was right.
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye?
[B] [A] [E] And now, I'm glad I did.
[B] Oh my gosh.
What a beautiful acapella intro to this song.
She, she sang the first verse there.
Just so well done and only a style that Kelly Clarkson can do.
You guys, she's been killing
it on her talk shows.
So many covers, especially during the pandemic, and now she was asked to come
on to the Kennedy Center Honors a big deal and honor one of the greats of country music,
Garth Brooks.
And, she's also been asked to do that in the past for Reba McEntire.
We'll need
to feature that performance on the channel as well.
But, y'all, this is already making me nostalgic
for the 80s again.
Those of you that know, I have a special place in my heart for that decade.
This song came out in 1989 on Garth Brooks' first album and was such an iconic hit and remains so
today.
One of my favorite songs ever and I just love it so much.
Kelly starting out here, though,
some mezzo-forte singing and her mid-range chest voice here just starting to tell this story.
Beautifully done.
So controlled in that acapella section.
A bit of inflection here and there
in the typical Kelly style.
A nice connection to that upper chest voice just a bit.
But, now the instrumentation is entering here with her and it is just beautiful.
[Abm]
[A] Such [B] [A]
[B] [Gb] control.
[Abm]
[A] [B] [Dbm]
[E] Beautiful by Kelly.
[A] [B] Beautiful
[E] [A] [E] lyrics.
How [A] the king would fall.
[B] Hey, who's to say?
[A] I might have changed [B] it all.
You guys, I hate to clip that off there but I know she's about to move into the chorus again.
What wonderful care she's taking of the lyrics here in the verses and, you know, I did read a
little bit about this performance.
She said she was pretty nervous singing in front of Garth Brooks.
This is a pretty scaled-down setting for the Kennedy Honors, actually, and so she's pretty
exposed right here with minimal instrumentation.
I believe piano only at this point.
I've been so
mesmerized by her voice and looking at Garth and these wonderful lyrics.
It's such a beautiful song.
It really touches me.
You know, I've got my Kleenex on hand here, my tissue on hand.
This just takes me back.
There were so many people in my life in the 80s that I no longer have and
this is just such a moving song and when I think about everything that was going on in my life
back then.
I'm in the middle of high school and Garth has just burst onto the scene with this
great album.
Of course, Friends in Low Places followed this song but Kelly Clarkson here.
The control, the inflection, the minimalistic run.
She's not [Ebm] overdoing it here.
She's making it her
own but really paying homage to that original version by Garth and it's just touching me.
[A] Oh, yes!
[B] [Abm] Wonderful [A] [B] emotion.
[A] I'm better left to [B] [Gbm] chance.
I could have missed [Abm] the pain but I'd have had [A] to miss.
[B] [Gbm] I'm alive.
I'm better left to [Ebm] chance.
[Abm] You guys, I hate to clip this.
We're gonna go back for some of this but I just love the nuances
with dynamics now that she's taking.
A little louder when she connects with that chest voice
in the upper parts of the phrase here, pulling it back when she's down in the middle section
and that just adds to the emotion, the care, the perfection of this performance, you guys.
Let's go back 10 seconds, at least.
The emotion here by Garth Brooks is just so wonderful to see.
You know, he's being honored.
This is a big deal.
Only the top artists in the nation here get
honored at the Kennedy Center Awards.
I just love watching it every year.
It's not only musical
artists.
It's from many different genres of the arts, mediums of the arts, if you will,
and it's just always a special performance.
But, again, this song, you guys.
Oh, and Kelly.
[A] Had to miss.
[B]
[Gbm] I'm alive.
Yes!
I'm better [B] left to chance.
I could have [Abm] missed the pain.
Great run.
But I'd have [A] had to miss. Oh, [B] wow.
[Dbm] The day.
[N] Wonderful.
Oh my gosh.
Of course, that was Debbie Allen there.
Several stars being honored that
night and just so wonderful.
I don't do this a lot but we're gonna go back and watch a little
more of this.
The short version of this song.
Kelly just knocked it out of the park [A] with this,
you guys, and you can see the emotion on Garth Brooks' face and Tricia as well.
[B]
[E] I love the country placement [A] of her vowels in this.
Hey, [B] who wants to say?
A little thinner, a bit nasal at [A] times.
My mouth has changed [B] it all.
Oh, [A] you hear it there.
[B] The way it all [Abm] ends.
The way it all [A] goes.
[B]
[A] Love it.
[B] [Gbm] I love the [B] inflection at the end of the phrase.
[Abm] But I'd have had [A] to miss.
[B]
[Gbm] Yes!
I'm better left to [Ebm] chance.
[B] I could have missed [Abm] the pain.
Wonderful.
But I'd have had to [A] miss.
Debbie Allen [B] here.
The day.
[Dbm] [Db]
[N] Oh my gosh.
Yes!
What wonderful control there at the end of the word,
dance.
A bit of vibrato there at the end.
Just really freeing up any tension in that note.
Just beautifully done to end but also love the inflection she had and a bit of that freedom
at the end of other phrases within that song as well.
Just Kelly Clarkson, superstar entertainer
here.
Just honoring one of the greats and what a special, special performance that was.
Touched my heart today.
Kelly does it for me, you guys.
I remember her from way back on American Idol
but what an excellent career now.
Just amazing and who do they ask now to honor such incredible,
iconic artists that these awards show multiple times now?
Kelly Clarkson.
Absolutely, you guys.
Just phenomenal.
A special song to me, a great vocal performance, as always, by Kelly and Garth
emotional there in the audience, you guys.
It got me all worked up as well and I just am so happy
to be sharing these performances with you all and sharing in this moment with you and I appreciate

[A] Love it.
_ _ [B] [Gbm] I love the [B] inflection at the end of the phrase.
[Abm] _ But I'd have had [A] to miss.
[B] _ _
[Gbm] Yes!
I'm better left to [Ebm] chance.
[B] I could have missed [Abm] the pain.
Wonderful.
But I'd have had to [A] miss.
Debbie Allen [B] here.
The _ day.
_ [Dbm] _ [Db] _ _ _
It got me all worked up as well and I just am so happy
to be sharing these performances with you all and sharing in this moment with you and I appreciate
you being here.
