Hello, YouTube world.
This is a banjo demonstration on the song Wagon Wheel by the Old Crow Medicine Show.
I recently found a video by a user called 200000028.
You can look him up.
Six zeros, I don't know.
All I know is he showed me the chord changes and what he thought was the picking pattern
and I took it up from there.
I guess to start off, to play it in the right key, it's in the key of A.
You want to put
a capo [F#] on the second fret there and tune this string up to A or have a fifth string capo.
I use a pen cap so that works well too.
[A] So there you're in [F#] A.
And then the chord change out of this would be G, D, E minor, C and
it's all up one step.
So it would be [A] A, D, [B] F minor [D] and then D.
But I'm going to speak in normal terms.
[A] So G, [F#m] E minor, [A] C.
So I guess you can kind of hear it.
I'll move this to the banjo.
Alright so the chord change.
[E] Open, [A] D, E minor, [D] D.
[E]
[D] [A] [E]
[F#m] [D] [A] Yeah so he showed that in his video but I figured I'd go over it.
Now what I wanted to focus on was the picking pattern.
He [E] figured out the picking pattern pretty well actually.
He had it as an arpeggio picking pattern but it's actually an alternated arpeggio picking pattern.
So he goes straight down the line [A] which is really close to right.
So if you want to use that method it's a bit easier than the way I pick it.
But I think it's a little bit off.
But this is what it sounds like.
[E] [F#m] [D]
So I guess that's how he has it [Am] and I want to thank him for the video because I took
that and I changed it a little bit.
But what it sounds like is an alternating arpeggio pattern which [E] means you start on
the same note with your thumb [A] and then you come down instead of up.
And then after that you're going to play these two together and then the second finger, first
finger, second finger.
So I think you can follow [Am] that.
But I play with all four fingers [A] so I think you can follow that.
I can't do it too fast.
I'm not that good at picking yet but I just want you guys to know the pattern it goes in.
[E] Now you're going to do this on every note except for the second, the D.
Because listen to this.
You don't want that.
No.
Not pretty.
So on the D just play this note.
So on the D it goes.
You don't play this on the D.
Does that work?
So let's go through the [Am] notes I guess.
So A, [A]
D, [E] [F#m] E minor.
[D]
[A] And that's pretty much the picking pattern.
So [F#] the band is two banjos so I guess if you want to play it you can either do the strumming
or do the picking.
Either way they're both part of the song and hopefully you guys can take the pattern I
figured out and get good at it.
Make a video.
Post it to my video response.
I'd love to see it done better than me but that's the pattern it goes in.
So yep.
[F#m] [D] [A] [E]
[F#m] [D] [A]
[E] [F#]
So and again refer back to that last video by 200028.
He goes a little more in depth on the notes and a little bit more style into that.
I just wanted to make sure that the picking pattern was on there correctly so you guys
can practice that and get better at the song.
So yeah that's about it.
