Welcome to Leo Kaki Watermelon lesson 1.
[N] We're in an open detuning.
I'm going to go over
the two basic picking [B] patterns that I believe he uses for this song.
Picking pattern number 1.
[A] It's the 5th string, thumb, then you're going to play your 3rd
string with [F#m] your index, then you're going to drop down with your [B] thumb and play the
4th string, and then you're going to use your middle finger for the 1st string.
[F#m]
[B] Up [F#m] [B]
[F#m]
[B]
here I've got the chord for the 1st song, [Am] which again we're in open [Em] D, but I'm pressing
down the 5th [B] string, [N] 3rd fret, and the 3rd string, 3rd fret, with my middle finger on
top and my ring finger down here.
Hard to see, I'm sorry about that.
That's the chord
I've got.
This is the pattern [B] I'm doing.
[A] [F#m] 5, 3, [B] 4, [F#m] 1, 5, [B] 3, 4, 1, 5, 3, 4.
[F#m]
[B] [E]
What I did was
change chords, not patterns.
[B] [E]
[B] Now I did change to all open strings, I'm not chording anything,
I'm just playing an open D chord, and I changed my pattern.
So instead of that, instead of
doing the 5, 3, 4, 1, I'm going up to the 6th string with the thumb, then I'm hitting
my 3rd string again with the index, and then I'm doing my 4 with the thumb, and then the
1st string with the middle finger.
So all I did was I dropped down a string.
Same picking
pattern, but I went from the 5th string to the 6th string.
So here I am [F#m] with my original.
[B] [E]
[B]
I'm going 6, 4, actually I'm doing 6, index on the 3rd, 4th string, thumb, and then the
1st string middle.
So I'm going to do these two patterns, I'll do them open, [N] we'll put
this little piece of paper in here and maybe you'll be able to visualize that a little
bit better.
So [F#] [B] I'm doing the 5, 3, 4, 1.
Then the other pattern, I'm doing just the
6, 3, 4, 1.
Let's see if I can keep this here.
[F#m] [B]
[E]
[B]
So I'm going 6, 3, 4, 1.
So I'm going 6, 3,
