Hey, thanks for joining me today.
I've got a good question from Ishmael in Oregon
God bless I saw your video of over playing by the way.
We've got a lot of comments about that video
It's one of the first ones
That you see on our videos of the band over playing
Some of you actually liked it a lot
But he says I go to a Hispanic church.
I play guitar and we really don't have a worship leader
We just go and play but the problem I'm having is that my drummer piano player and bass player
overplay
Not sure if they just want to show off
But I wish I could do something to help them
You can all sit down and watch the video again on the worship band if you go to the worship band
DVD watch that whole thing and all the band members talk about
Not over playing and the thing you got to realize is it's not about you.
It's not about the drummer
It's not about the bass player and not about the keyboard player.
It's it's about God.
Look at what we're doing here
The situation as they're all under 20 years old, which I think it's great you got a young band there
And I'd like to show them what?
What what should I do?
I'm praying for my pastor to put a worship leader there, but not sure why he hasn't done that
I've been there for four years.
I'm looking forward to some advice you can give me.
Thanks so much
I really like how you guys play how you're disciplined with your music
Ishmael thanks so much for your question
again, I would say when you have a young band and
And maybe inexperienced being on stage the opportunity to get in front of a crowd and play is great
It's like wow, we're a band we can play and the the temptation is to fill every bar with
With some kind of a riff or a drum fill or a piano fill
But I would encourage you as a team and you seem to have a leadership
Ability there.
I don't know why there's not
Nobody has appointed a leader over the worship team
And I think that's something that you really need to address with your pastor
Just ask him and maybe you can volunteer to serve and to share with him to say pastor
We've reached a certain point in our worship team and and I think we need in order to grow to the next level
There needs to be
somebody in charge
It doesn't have to be me
But I I'm willing to serve if you would if you would let me if you would want me to so I think
You know present it in that spirit just offer your your services
to bring the band together and then I would sit down and I would watch the
the worship band DVD where we talk about over playing and just
And then rehearse some songs and I would say to the to the piano player the bass player and the drummer
Let's let's try this song again and play
50% of the notes you're playing it just be a good exercise encourage them to play the song and
Every note they're tempted to play
Only play one of the two, you know
So you're 50% less than playing and do it as a kind of a fun exercise
Let's see how simply we can play this song and what you want to do with the with a young band is just get them
To see the difference say oh wow, I can hear I can hear the difference
and you know
Hopefully in the process, they'll get a picture of that and then maybe dial it back
to the middle
Where and just have some fun with it rather than pointing out.
Hey, you're over playing stop it
You know just kind of make it a fun exercise
But it seems to me that you do [F#] need to have that
That that conversation with your pastor.
It's been four years.
You've been [D] there.
There's there the there's this
Their lack of leadership in the worship band and I think you need to appoint a leader and I would just offer to serve
And hopefully that'll go well for you.
But the overplaying thing
That'll come with experience
But I think you can have fun with it not point a finger and say you guys are overplaying just have fun with it and
try certain exercises and
challenge them to
To play a song with 50% less fills and and then they had done before and I think I think
It'll it'll be a lot of fun.
And I think you'll make some real good progress
So I'll be praying for you Ishmael.
Thanks so much for your question
And if you've got a question, you want to ask me go to my website Don Moen
comm forward slash ask Don and
I'll give it my best shot.
We love answering these questions and love your input to God bless make it a great day
