[N] Hi guys, this is Troy Mayer and that song I'm sure you've heard before, What Can I Sing
by Hoodoo Gurus.
I wanted to do a little video of it today and it's not too difficult, [Ab] requires knowledge
of a few basic open chords and that's about it.
So I'll do [Gb] the whole lesson in close up with [D] maybe some chord checks and stuff as well
to help you take [Eb] a look at it.
Alright, so the song starts like this with a D [D] chord and we go like this.
[Gm] Alright, so we pick the open D [D] string, [C] hit the D chord with [D] our [Gm]
second finger on but
then we take the second finger [D] off.
Watch.
[G] Now the strumming I'm doing in my right hand is kind of a stab, [D] upstroke strum.
So [E] we kind of mute the strings like that.
This [Gm] takes a lot of practice I realise.
[D]
[E] Then we go to the E chord.
We hit the bottom strings of the E chord [D] and then our pinky does that same [E] F sharp
to E that was done [D] in the D chord [E] at the start.
Alright.
[C] Again, same [Ab] kind of muted [E] upstroke pattern.
[Eb] And then we're going to go to a G chord but we're not going to play the whole G chord,
we're just going to play the second [G] and third finger on the G and the D note and that first
[A] finger is going to do that picking part.
Alright.
[G]
So
[D] [E] [G]
[Cm] that last little bit on the G [Gm] goes, low strings on the G [G] and we go on, off, on, off,
on, off and then we're going to play D, G and [Dm] B strings with leaving that third [G] finger on there.
[Gm] And [G] then we end off with that.
We put it into context and
[D] then we all start the riff again.
[G]
[E] E, [G] G.
[D] [E] [G]
[D]
Alright.
Now [G] that's basically your verses, intro and [D] verse for the song.
[E] [G]
[D] Had another [Bb] thing, [E] well I've been wondering lately.
[G]
[D]
[C] That's another [Gm] thing in between times, in between each kind of line of the verse when
you get back to the [D] D you go pinky on.
Alright.
[A] [G]
Now, [Bb] now let's play the chorus.
Alright.
So [D] once you get to the D at the end of the verse you want to [G] go,
[A]
[E] [G]
[A] [E] What's mercy?
[G]
[A] [E] Okay [C] so three chords in this are [E] obviously A, which I'm [A] not playing as an open chord,
I'm kind of playing as a power chord [B] because you're going to need that finger there with
[Gm] that second finger [A] ready to go [G] to hit that third fret low G note [E] before you go to the
E. Alright.
So, chorus is,
[Gm] [A]
[E] [G]
[A] [D] [E] What's mercy?
[G]
[A] [E] [G]
[A] [E] [G]
[A] [E] [G]
[A] G, A, [E]
[G] E, [A] G, A.
[E]
Alright, that's all there is to it.
[G] What's my E, [A] G to A, twice.
[G] [E] [A] [G] [E]
[A] [E] Mercy.
[A]
[G] [E] [G] [A]
[C] [E] [G] [E] [Gm] [A]
[E] You can try and do [A] the whole G when you do that little run down.
[E]
[G] [A] [E]
[G] [A]
[E] [G]
[A] [G] [E] [G] Now when I hit that [Eb] G, go back down, I do it with [G] an upstroke in the right [A] hand.
[E]
[D] Now [G] the basic way to play this is just try and follow what [F] you hear in the singing, in the [E] lyrics.
[Eb] What's [A] my C, [G] [E] D, E, G.
[C] [E] Alright.
[G] [A] [E]
Alright, so now we're going to the [Bb] bridge section of What's my C.
Starts with [A] an A.
[G] [D]
[G] [A]
[G] [E]
[A] Alright, so I've got A, you do it as an A power chord like that or normal A.
Down, up, and then I do another, yeah, so we do a down, up, down, up, down, up, [G] G,
[D] D,
[G] and we do that little in between there, picking of the G note on the third fret of the low E.
[A]
And again we do that same pattern, down, up, down, up, down, up, [G] and G, [E] E.
For two [Em] bars, [D] [E] [G]
and then back into that chorus.
Alright.
[A] So once again, down, up, down, up, down, up, [G] G, D, [D] [G] [A]
[G] G, E.
[E] [Em]
[D] Back into the chorus and out with [N] the rest of the song.
Okay, well, that's What's My C by Hoodoo Guru.
