where do I store... 91 instruments? Q + A chords
Start Jamming...
[Am] Hey guys, [C] this is [Bb] Luke, aka Instrument [A] Maniac, and today I [F] thought I would show you where I
actually [Am] store all 91 [Bb] of my instruments.
A lot of [A] people are asking, well, do you have [Dm] some, like,
mansion [Am] storage unit [Eb] that you [Bb] store all of these in?
It's [A] actually just a two-bedroom apartment,
[F] so let's [C] go walk [Eb] around.
You [Bb] don't actually need that [A] much space, surprisingly, to [F] store
91 instruments.
[Am] So in the [F] living room here, I actually use [A] a lot of these instruments as art
pieces.
[F] So on this [Am] wall, I have [F] the half [Dm]-sized cello, the viola, [Em] and then my German violin.
[F] If
you make your way over to the corner [B] over here, [Bb] I actually store the lever [Am] harp.
It's [F] great to
practice there when it's a nice sunny [C] day, and you can open [Dm] the door and open the windows, and [A] you
get a nice breeze coming through.
[F] So going into the bedroom [Am] here, where I store [Bb] the [A] bass and the
cello.
So [F] those are kind of the outlier instruments.
Where I store [A] most of them [Dm] is in the [A] second
bedroom slash [F] studio.
So when you first walk in here, you'll actually notice that I store my
Czech [C] violin right there.
And then you can't [F] walk into this room without [E] seeing this massive [C] pedal
harp in the center.
[Bb] It kind of does take up a lot of space, but I don't really know where else to
store it at this [D] point.
In this corner, [Am] I have kind of the brass section.
On this [A] wall, I've got kind
of all of my [F] fretted string instruments.
And then finally, the moment you've all been waiting [A] for,
this is the [Dm] closets where everything [Am] else is stored.
[Bb] So when you [A] first walk in on your right,
[F] you'll see this massive [C] case.
That is the Contra bass [Bm] clarinet.
It is [A] nearly six feet [F] tall.
And
[Am] behind this, we [F] have my [Dm] trumpet, soprano [A] sax, and bass flute [F] along with the vibraphone.
[Am] Up here,
I have my three [Bb] flutes.
[A]
Two of them are for outdoor [F] performance.
[Am] One of them is for at-home [F] recording.
[Dm] I've got the [E] B-flat clarinet, [A] the oboe, the E-flat [Am] clarinet, the alto flute, and my [F] entire recorder
family right in there.
[A] In this basket up here, I [F] have my piccolo, some of my other recorders,
and a lot of my [Dm] sheet music.
[Em] Up here, I have the tenor sax, [F] the bassoon, the accordion.
I got [C] my
C melody, [Dm] double [Am]-strung harp, alto clarinet, [Gm] auto harp, [C]
alto sax, and then the [Dm] bass clarinet [E] right
there.
I've got a lot of the Native American flute [Am] shenanigans here.
I've got the wind chimes.
I [Dm] got
djembe, toy [A] piano.
Down here, I [F] actually have percussion instruments, which are kind of a
nightmare to keep organized as [G] seen in this drawer.
In [Em] this drawer, actually, I [E] have my [F] reeds for my
reed instruments.
[B] I got some [Am] miscellaneous reeds up here.
And then [Em] down here, [Bb] I actually have
[F] ligatures and mouthpieces.
Move the [Bm] cowbell aside, I've got a lot of [Am] bows there.
Then we got the
[Em] snare [E] drum.
[F] We got a lot of the cymbals back [D] here, and then the washboard, [Em]
and [Bb] then the automaton.
So [A] really, most of the [Dm] collection fits in this [Am] closet [Eb] here, as you can [Bb] see.
I got [A] a few stragglers
in the [Dm] storage unit, too.
[Am] The desk [Eb] bells, the [Bb] electric piano I don't use [A] super often.
[Dm] I got a
clarinet I'm [Am] trying to sell [Eb] on [Bb] Craigslist here.
And then finally, the [A] trombone that, according to
[Dm] the [Em] comment [F] section, I did [Am] dirty with that [Eb] slide.
But [Bb] you know what?
I [A] like the slide on the trombone,
so I [Dm] stand by it.
[Am] Well, I hope you [Dm] enjoyed seeing the space and [A] where all of my [F] instruments are hung
up and stored.
Since so [A] many of you are [Bb] new from that wonderful [A] 91 Licks video, [Dm] I thought I'd do a
short [Am] Q&A to [C] kind of give you an idea [Bb] of who I am and what the vibe [A] is on this channel.
And [F] here we
go.
At what age [Am] did you start playing music, [Dm] and what instrument did you start [A] with?
I tried to
start with [F] viola at age 10.
[Am] Didn't work out [F] too well.
I was pretty bad at it.
But at [A] age 11, my
mom was like, why don't you [F] try flute?
And so flute was the actually kind of real [A] first instrument I
started on.
Did [F] you hesitate before buying an [Am] instrument, and do you [Bb] learn on your own every
time?
[A] Generally, I don't buy an instrument [F] unless I'm going to use it pretty often in a piece.
I
actually [A] don't learn on my own often at all.
I'm [Dm] currently as an adult taking [Am] violin and [Eb] harp
lessons.
[Bb] How [A] could you practice so many instruments?
[F] I actually don't.
I practice violin for an hour at
lunch every day, [Am] and harp for an hour when I [F] wake up in the morning.
What was your experience with
getting [A] your hands on [Am] a pedal harp?
I really lucked out.
My harp [F] instructor [Eb] was selling her pedal harp,
so we kind of worked out a deal there.
[A] Is there a particular genre of [F] music that you favor?
[Am] I gotta
say I love [E] disco.
Dua Lipa is my [A] gal.
What got you started [F] arranging Thomas music, and were you [Am] always
a fan of the [Dm] show?
I actually just [A] randomly decided to record [Dm] Gordon's Theme two [F] years ago,
and people really enjoyed it.
And I have many [A] pictures like this from childhood.
[F] What's your
overall opinion of [Am] string instruments, [B] and which do you think is the [D] hardest to learn?
[A] I started
out as a [Dm] woodwind person at [Am] 18.
I took cello lessons [N] for six years.
It was [A] like climbing Mount
Everest.
[Dm] Mid-20s, 25, [F] I was like, well I'm gonna try to learn violin and be a one-man [A] orchestra.
I thought some [Dm] of the cello technique would transfer.
[Am] It really does not transfer.
All I
have to say is good luck on any of them, because they are so freaking hard.
[A] Is soprano [Dm] sax easy to
[A] play?
I wouldn't say it's easy [Am] to play, but saxophones in general are pretty forgiving in
terms of starting [A] out as an instrument.
[F] Great option for kind [Am] of a lower [Cm] learning curve.
[Dm] Which
motivates you more to [A] try a new instrument?
It's [Dm] always the need for [F] certain sounds.
What are the
next instruments you want to get soon?
I [Bm] really want to get a contrabass [Am] flute.
I think the sound
is [Em] awesome, but the [Bb] entire comment [C] section wants me to get [G] a bari sax or a tuba, [Am] so we'll find out.
[Em] Is there [E] any musical [Gm] foundation necessary to [Db] become a multi [F]-instrumentalist?
Yeah, I always [C] say
focus on your technique and [Bb] definitely take music [A] lessons.
In the [Dm] long run, that's going to help you
[C] most.
Who is your biggest [Bb] musical inspiration?
[A] I'd have to say [F] Ravel, because I love his use of color
[C] and music, [Bb] and I actually have his treble [Em] clef from one of his manuscripts trans
transcribed
on me.
God.
Tattooed on me right [A] here.
What is the [F] most expensive instrument that you have?
I believe the [Cm] pedal harp [Dm] or the bass flute that I'm [A] still paying off.
[F] Is there an instrument that
you don't want [Am] to learn?
No, I would love to [A] learn everything about all the time.
Do you [F] name all of
your instruments?
No, I can't remember that many names.
[Em] What are your interests outside [F] of Thomas
and music?
My main job is [A] actually a geologist, so I love looking at minerals and rocks and
[Am] environmental issues, and then I also go to the gym and lift [Bb] every day.
I want to learn [A] bassoon.
Where and how can I get [F] one for a lower price?
[C] eBay, Facebook [Bb] Marketplace, and Craigslist [A] are the
best places to get [F] used instruments if you know [Am] what you're looking for, as seen by this contrabass
clarinet.
When will the next bandwagon song be?
For those of you that are new, every year I do [Db] a
community collaboration with all of [F] my bandwagoneers and subscribers out there, so the announcement
video for that will be [A] up in about August, so [F] keep an eye out for that then.
And with that, thank you
for checking out my [A] apartment tour and mini Q&A.
[Cm] If you are not already a member of the bandwagon,
why don't you come on down and [A] subscribe?
We have a lot of fun on this [Am] channel.
It's all positive.
It's all great music-related [Dm] stuff.
I will see [A] you in two weeks on Wednesday, and [F] take care,
and I hope you're doing [Bb] well.
