_ _ _ [E] _ Hey, I'm Ryan Naylor and this is how to play Where Is My Mind by Pixies.
A real cult classic this one.
I discovered it like many people from the Fight Club movie.
At the end where all those buildings are blowing up.
_ I love this one.
Not a beginner's tune, we've got barre chords here and some picking parts and a guitar solo.
_ So grab your guitar and let's get stuck in.
Don't forget to subscribe and like my video if you enjoy it.
It really does help the channel.
So we're at 82 BPM, we're in 4-4 and we've got a repeating progression of two beats per
chord which goes E, _ _
_ [C#m] C sharp minor off the fifth string, [G#] G sharp major off the sixth
string, [A] A major off the sixth [E] string.
So E for two, [C#m] C sharp minor, _ [G#] G.
_ _ [A] _ _ [E] Okay, that's it.
That progression is done two times and then twice again with the guitar part.
_ Which will be coming up later on.
Verse one at 28 seconds, we do the progression three times.
Chorus at 46, again we do the progression three times and then it changes.
We go [E] E, _ _ [G#]
G sharp, _ [A] A, _ _ [Am]
A minor, _ [C#m] _ C sharp minor for four.
Hold that one and [B] then [B] four strums on your B chord.
_ [E] _ Avoid that top [B] string, that's sounding really bad.
_ Two, three, [E] four and E.
_ And that's going to be the song basically.
Just look out on the second chorus at 132.
On that B chord you're going to hold for four measures as the guitar does his little [B] solo.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ [G] What makes it sound like the tune is the strumming pattern.
Okay, so sixteenth note strum.
So already we're going one and a two and a three and a four and a.
That's the movement of the [Bm] hand.
Got to get that in there. _
Okay and [F] the strumming pattern is going to be down, down, down, [F#] down, up, down, down,
down, down, up, down, down, down, down, up, down, up, down, up, [E] down, up.
So it changes on the A chord.
So it's one and two [C#m] and a three and four and [G#] a one and two [A] and a three and a four and a. _
Little look out on that A chord.
What actually happens is the chord changes just slightly on the fourth sixteenth of beat
three on the up.
_ _ _ [F#] Take the fingers off.
Keep the bar in place but the other fingers come off.
So we get this [A] chord. _
_ [Am] _ _ [E] Then they come back on on the [A] down strum.
_ _ _ [E] And then on the last two sixteenths the hand is sliding down.
So we're kind of _ strumming, kind of [Em] clicks or open strings as we go back to the E chord.
So [A] it's one three and a four [E] and a one.
[A] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
That all together then is one. _ _
[C#m] _ _ _ [G#] _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [C#m] _ _ _
_ [G#] _ Here [A] comes the first one.
[E]
With your feet on the [C#m] air and on the [G#] ground.
_ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _ _
Try [C#m] this trick [G#] and spin it. Yeah.
[A] _ _ [E] _ _ Your [C#m] head will collapse [G#] but there's nothing in it.
[A] And you ask yourself [E] where is [C#m] my mind?
[G#] _
Where is [A] my mind?
[E] Where _ _ is [C#m] my _ mind?
[G#] _ _
_ [A] _ _ [E] _ Oh, _ [C#m]
my.
_ [G#] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ _ [G#] We're in the [A] water, see it [Am] swimming.
_ [C#m] _
_ Two, three, [B] four. _
_ _ _ _ [E] _ _ [B] Okay, on that B chord it's down, down, down, down, up, up, down, up, down, up, down, up.
[E] _ Okay. _ _ _
And that's the song basically.
Let's grab our electrics and have a look at that intro part.
All right, so into the neck for the intro part.
And over the E chord we are on fret five on the B string, fret four on the E string.
_ Kind of like in a D chord shape there.
_ And we're picking string two and then string one.
_ _ _ Note we're going to let these notes ring throughout.
_ So _ you _ _ _ _ _ [G] do that across that first measure.
One and two and three and four and.
And then finger one is going to do like a mini bar, [F#] fret four on both [G#] strings one and two. _
_ That same picking pattern on the first two beats.
One and two and.
[E] So up to there is one and two and three and four [G#] and one and two and.
_ [Em] And then on the last [E] beat we go three and.
_ _ On playing both fret five and the open E string.
_ _ _ [B] _
And then we get that collapse as we move to the fourth [E] fret.
So it's three and a four and a.
Down, up, down, up, down, up.
_ _ [G#] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [G#] _ _ _ [E] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [N] _ There are actually two guitar solos in both the left and the right speaker.
I've kind of gone for the one I think in the right.
Which to me stands out a little more.
So this is how you're going to play that.
You [C#] start with _ _ [D] a unison [A] bend.
Fret nine [E] on the G string, fret [E] seven on the B string.
And you bend _ [D#] _ _
[E] that _ note on string three until it sounds the same or close.
[C#m] And then you go up to the note on string two.
[C#] _ _
_ _ _ [D] That's a bit of [C#] a.
_ _ We kind of get there but not entirely there.
_ _ _ And [A] then with one and two.
[C#] _ _ [E] _ _ [B] _
So we're in the bend, pre bend.
_ [F#] _ _ [E] _
_ [A] Release that bend as you pick. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [C#] _
So we've got.
_ [F#] _ _ _ [B] _
_ _ _ _ And [D] then _ seven.
[E] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [G#] _ [D] So it's seven, _
[E] nine, [F#m] _ seven, [D] ten.
Seven, [E] nine, seven, ten.
Sorry, sliding up here with the first finger.
Seven, [E] nine, seven, ten.
[G] _
Twelve.
Ten on the [C#] first. _ _ _ _
[F#] And then it's kind of like a half bend into a full bend as we pick.
_ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ So on those last two beats of the _ [F#] solo.
We're full bending.
Twelve to fourteen.
[D] _ _ _ _
_ _ Kind of bending and release.
So that all together is going to go [D#] like this. _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _
_ [F#] _ _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ [E] _ _ Okay guys, that's the song.
Hope you enjoyed that one.
