I'm sure everybody in this room has met people [N] that
The first time you meet them you feel like you've known them your whole life anybody y'all know like that
and there's just an instant bond, you know and
That's exactly what I had with this guy that I'm about to introduce to you the first time I ever met him
The
First time we actually even spoke to each other I guess was backstage at the CMA Awards in
1990 and I
saw him in
The hallway, I mean you're everybody, you know, it's like being two lanes of traffic
Backstage because the hallways are just packed and everybody's going one direction or the other
And I'm in line
It's there's Loretta lens right in front of me and Johnny Cash was about four people in front of me
and George Jones was about two people behind me and
You know
Clint black was like right behind him and all these different people and I'm looking at these people coming down the other way and there's
Garth Brooks, Allen Jackson and
Emmylou Harris and all these people and I see this guy from a long way off
Because he's got first of all first thing I noticed was the hair
perfect
Second thing I noticed was he's got a nudie suit on man
The bling was just awesome.
That's before anybody knew what bling was, you know
And I remember passing him in the hallway and I looked at him and I pointed at him as
as I walked past and he did the same thing to me and
I as he walked past I said, hey dog.
I love you
And he pointed at me and he said I love you, too
And we actually met
for the first time really
Where we had a chance to sit down and talk
About a year or so later he wrote co-wrote a song
That was a big big hit for me and we were on
the set of the video shoot for this particular song and
I didn't have my bus there he did and
so in between takes we would go out and just hang on his bus and we sat and we talked and
we realized
Right from the very beginning that we were
twin brothers from a different mother and
I love this little boy.
I can't tell you how much
his influence and his
just just
incredible
musicianship and songwriting and performance of the ability
Has been able to inspire me over the years and he is such a pleasure to work with we can go
literally and we have for years
without seeing each other and when we see each other it's like
No time has passed
Everything is just it's like going right back to where we left off the last time and I am very very proud
And very very privileged to introduce to you tonight my buddy, mr.
Marty Stewart y'all
[G] Thank you Bubba, thank [N] you
You singing pretty tonight I've been upstairs listening you taking care of business
I'm trying just to keep up with you.
Well, hey, I appreciate that nice introduction
Only thing I want to tell you one thing I've been a fan of yours since I was a little boy
[G] That's what I tell everybody about he well now come on
You know, I tell everybody when I first came to Nashville and this is the truth.
I
Didn't know anybody and I was I really felt like an outsider for
[E] so many years and
When I met this old boy, he took me around Immediately and
Started introducing me to people that he knew because he's been in this business since Moby Dick was [N] a sardine
And he knew everybody.
I didn't know anybody he knew everybody and he introduced me to some of the
Not only some of the greatest
Idols that I've ever had in business, but also
Some of the people that
Turned out to be some of my dearest friends throughout the years
[D] people like Johnny Cash and
Earl Scruggs and
Louie Scruggs and just so many people that he introduced me to over the years.
He's like come on over
Let's let's let's go pick at Earl's house.
I said you kidding me
Let's go meet Johnny Cash or let's go talk to this [E] one.
Let's go talk to Haggard
let's go talk to George Jones, or let's go talk to this one [Em] that one the other and
He really opened [G#] a lot of those doors for me and and I really appreciate it and [E] the friendship
Though [N] more than more than any of that all that was wonderful
But the friendship and the brotherhood this man and I have shared over the years is just something extremely special and I
Am very very thankful
[G] You know any songs about drinking
Goes like this there was a [B] time I [C] could break my [G] fears away
Drown out all heartache [A] hurt me [D] night and day
[F#] When [G] the thought of you
Came a-crashin' [C] through
Lord that had me one [G] more.
That's right.
Now the whiskey [D] just ain't working [G] Anymore
I [C] need a one good honky-tonk angel
[G] To turn my life around
That's the reason
[E] For me to lay [A] this rough [D] bottle down
[G] Well, I want it warm and willing.
[C] Lord that's what I've been [G] looking for
Because the whiskey [D] ain't working anymore
