Welcome!
In this guitar lesson for Whiskey Before Breakfast, we'll break down the four parts of the arrangement.
We'll have a slow playthrough of the entire part for each of the versions,
and then we'll have a chat about any of the bars that look a little bit tricky within the tab.
So, up first we'll have a look at variation number one, part A.
One, two, three, [G] four, one.
[A] [B] [C#]
[D]
[F#m] [D]
[E] [G] [D]
[E]
[E]
[D]
[E] [Bm]
[G] [Dm]
[D] [E] [D]
Okay, for variation number one here, part A, we're really focusing around this open position,
so our C shape into a three [G]-finger F shape, [D]
and that's where our left hand sits most of the time.
So the initial, well, the pickup [E] notes into the first measure,
in the left hand, you can see that we'll hold this C chord and we're really working around that C shape.
I'm also using my little finger [G#] when we go to the third fret on string four.
You could use your third finger, I'll show you what I mean.
[A] [C#] [E] [F#]
[D] So there I use my little finger there on the third fret of the fourth string.
You could play in this way.
[G] [D]
The main difference really is [G#] that you don't get to hold onto that [D] low C bass note,
which is really [E] nice if you can hold that there and use your little finger in this way.
[G] [D]
You're creating nice long notes, which sounds really pretty.
So throughout this arrangement, if you can hold your notes for as long as possible until you need to change,
it does help with how [G#] the notes overlap in sound together.
To create chordal sounds.
So there's a hammer-on in measure two, [F#m]
[B] [D] with your first finger there from that C shape,
and then your second finger hammering on.
[F#] [C#]
There's a [G] little scale run there, [F#]
leading us into the F chord.
[D#] And this section here, we've got some cross-picking.
So we're playing a three-note pattern.
That [G] three-note pattern is
[B]
So try to alternate [G] your picking.
Down, up, down, [B] up.
[D]
And then we play a partial C chord.
Same pattern.
Down, up, down, up.
[E] And then the final measure in part A here, we return to the C chord.
[D]
[G] So part A in this variation really does stick to that open position around the C,
into [D] the F, and then some scale [E] notes [C#] to [D]
tie it all together.
If you'd like to have a look at the lessons for part B in this variation,
and also the variation number two, part A, part B,
head on over to www.pickandlessons.com
There's a link in the description.
Those video lessons will be in the same structure as this,
so we'll have a slow play-through,
and then we'll have a chat about anything that is potentially a little tricky
within the arrangement.
So head on over to www.pickandlessons.com
