[G] Hey, it's Andrew Huang!
Thought I'd make [G#] this video because everyone wants to know whether [Dm] this is a worthwhile [C] investment for themselves
and why [F] something that looks as cute and tiny as this [Am] is so [G]
expensive!
I'm gonna share the good and the bad with [D#m] you, and I think by the end of this video [G] you'll know exactly what the OP-1 is capable of
and whether it's [A] right for you.
[G]
Let's start with what you immediately see.
The [F#m] physical instrument.
It's actually [E] a little heavier than you might expect.
The [G] build quality is fantastic, all the components are top-notch,
the screen is sharp and bright, and these color [C#m]-coded multi-function [G] knobs make a whole lot of sense within the [Gm] UI.
So how about inside?
What are the [B] features?
Well, it's got a whole bunch of different synthesizer engines.
It's [F#] got a sampler.
It's got [C#] another sampler that's specifically tailored to drums.
It's got delicious [F#] onboard effects.
It's got a hidden [E] helicopter game.
[A] It's got a ton of creative sequencer modes.
It's [G] got a four-track recorder that lets you cut [C] and paste and loop and perform and mix.
It's [E] got a radio.
[G#] And just be all about her.
[G] You can listen to the radio or [C#] sample it.
You can [Gm] record external audio with the built-in mic or [F#] the line input.
[G#] You can re-sample internal [G] audio.
You can USB it to your computer [F] and now you have a MIDI controller.
And I think with all [D] that, I've covered the [G] main features.
How's the sound quality?
Well, you've got this output [C#] here and it sounds fantastic.
Here's a list of artists that have used the OP-1, so [Gm] it's good enough for them.
One other thing.
[G] I have never been as [D#] happy with [G] battery life in any device [C] as I have with the OP [G]-1.
I've had this for two years and if you watch my channel, you know how much I use it.
I think I've plugged [C] it into charge [D#] between 10 and 15 [G] times.
I brought it with me on a two-week tour through the States, played it on stage every single night.
Didn't plug it in [E] the whole time.
Can we just put [D] this battery [G] in my phone?
Let's talk about some cons though because it's not perfect.
It's amazing, but it's not perfect.
The built [A#]-in speaker, [G#] pretty tinny.
Four tracks to [C] record with is quite limiting.
[G] You can record two or three tracks together into one and combine them, but it's kind of a hassle.
You can also use only one effect [C] at a time on any given instrument
and [A#] only one effect at a time on the master [G] bus.
Naming presets is really annoying.
When you save presets, they're just [E] time stamped and [D] you have to connect to a [C] computer to rename them.
But when you're connected to a computer, [G] you can't play the sounds.
So you have to [C] find some way to remember what they all are
if you [Cm] want to give them names that [F#] have any relevance to what they sound like.
Lastly,
[B] these keys are [C#] not velocity sensitive.
I don't miss it as [Gm] much as I thought I would, but obviously [Cm] for many types of music,
it's [B] really good to have that extra [F] dimension of expression.
[Am]
[F#] [B] So [G] how about the [F#] price?
[C] There's no way [G#] around it.
The thing is [C] about a thousand bucks.
[G#] It's hefty.
I had my eye [D#] on it for years before I [C] took the plunge and I have no [F#] regrets,
[G#] but I don't think the [C#] OP-1 is for [F] [C] everybody.
More on that in a second.
I want to show you [G] why I think the OP-1 [F] is worth the price tag
and I'm going to [G] do that by comparing [F#] it to two [B] other pieces [C] of gear that I use a lot.
I have them right beside me.
[G] This is the Ableton Push [D] 2 and the Native Instruments [E] Komplete Kontrol [C] S61.
What do you think?
Do [F#] they look pro, [F] sleek, rugged, [G] functional?
In my experience, they are [C] all of the above and guess [D#] what?
They're cheaper than the OP [Cm]-1.
Amazon has [Em] the Push at $799 and the Kontrol [G] at $699.
So [F] why is this [Cm] so much more pricey?
Well, this [D#] can do more than [Cm] these two things put together.
This gear [G] on its own is [C] pretty much [A#] inert.
To unlock its full [D] potential, you need to pair it with the right software
and they each [F#] need different software.
So you're dropping [C#] another several hundred on software,
then [A] you gotta have a computer to run it on.
So when you get to [G] that point, sure, all this is more [A#] powerful than the OP-1.
But it still has one major drawback versus [C#] the OP-1
and it's the exact thing about the OP-1 that causes all [G#] the sticker shock.
[C#] It's tiny.
[G] [C#] This, I can't bring [G] to the park with me.
[E] This, [C#] I could fit 40 of these in a backpack.
So yeah, it's just like this tiny little thing.
[Gm] That's [B] what makes it amazing!
[E] [C#] [E]
[F#] So I don't recommend this to everyone.
I don't think it should [C#m] be anyone's first instrument unless [C] maybe you have infinite money.
If you've been [G] into music production [F#] for some time
and already have at least the basics of a [A] setup,
this [E] will 100% augment your [G] creativity.
And maybe more importantly, it will bring you [A] joy.
It is so [G] much fun to use.
If part of your job [F#m] involves music [F] production or composition or sound design,
this is one [G] of the best tools I could recommend to you.
This is one of [D] my desert island pieces.
[C#m] The [B] OP-1.
[C] F***ing [E] expensive.
[D#] Worth it [Cm] for some people.
[C] [B] [E] Thanks for watching!
