_ I remember when we first met Jason, _ we were at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, _
and we had a 20 by 20 foot booth there with furniture in it where people could come and sit and talk with us.
And that's what we go for. _
Jason came in the first night in a pair of blue jeans and a pullover shirt.
_ And he stood on the edge of the carpet.
He wanted to meet us, but he was kind of shy.
He just stood on the edge of the carpet.
And then he started walking.
He walked over this way a little bit and then he turned and he walked back that way.
Rodney saw him.
Rodney said, you think we ought to introduce ourselves to that kid?
I said, Lord, no, I'm just enjoying watching.
Look at him.
He's just back and forth.
_ _ _ So finally he came in and we were introduced to him.
We gave him an audition in a three story high concrete block stairwell.
And he's been singing with us ever since.
Did you enjoy Jason tonight? _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ I got to do this because there are so many people here that are like me that like old songs.
I just love old songs.
We're doing a lot of new songs tonight, but we're going to do a couple of old songs too because I just love them.
And I guarantee you a lot of people in this audience tonight like old songs.
How many of you like old songs?
Raise your hand.
Look at that.
Look at that.
_ See, I know what I'm talking about.
Old people like old songs.
_ _ _ _ _ I told them this afternoon I was going to do a song out of the old Redback Church of God hymnal a few weeks ago.
Well, it's been several months ago now.
We went to do a celebration concert for the 50th anniversary of this old song book.
And we're not Church of God.
We're Southern Baptist, but they invited us to come celebrate it.
So we went down and they had hired a full orchestra.
I think it was like 75 musicians and a 200-voice choir to back us up.
And from the minute the program started, the PA system squealed and popped.
And it just wouldn't.
Have you ever been to a concert like that?
I mean, just they could not get it right.
And so finally we were getting ready to go on and sing.
And I told the stage manager, I said, let us use our music, please, until you get this problem straightened out.
So he introduced us.
We walked out on the stage.
Jason hit the button on our little computer that plays our music.
And somebody had unplugged it. _ _ _
So there we stood in front of a thousand music directors with no music at all.
And Stan Whitmire, who's playing for us here tonight, just happened to be there playing for the choir that night.
And he's a great sight reader, so I had him run over to the piano.
And I told him what song we was going to do.
And he played the song.
And we sang the song.
And honey, when that song was over, that place came unglued.
They were screaming and hollering and pitching babies out of the balcony.
They loved it. _
_ _ Well, when they finally got settled down and back in their seats, there was an older lady on the second row, stood up and pointed her finger at me.
And she said, now that's the way you're supposed to do that kind of music.
Just piano and people.
None of that racket. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ Well, I said, Mom, sit down.
_ _ _ _ So I told some folks tonight we were going to do a song with just piano for those of you who like the really old, you know, convention style music.
I tell you what we're going to [Ab] do, Stan.
We'll do this in A flat and do us a verse, just an [B] old fashioned intro.
We'll do a verse.
Then we'll do a verse by the shape note, the solfège, you know, the shape, don't worry me stuff.
And then you do us another turnaround and we'll sing the last verse.
And let's do it just like we used to do it at the old singing schools.
All right,
