X is for... XTC chords
Start Jamming...
For X it was a bit of a problem because there [Dbm] was nothing like a hundred in fact
there are only 37 and of those 37 almost a third were XTC so XTC it is.
[D]
[Bm] I could name XTC, X-Mal Deutschland, X-Respect, X-California Band.
[G] Oh [Bm] yeah and a couple of other punky ones.
[E]
[D] [G] [E]
[D] [Bm] [B] [E]
[Am] [G] [E]
Let [D] me see, [B] yes, 72 I got together [C] with Colin [B] Moulding and Terry Chambers
Colin Moulding on bass, Terry on drums [Abm] and we called [A] ourselves the [D] Helium Kids
[G] which I thought was a fast modern name.
[A]
[G]
But the music was anything but fast and modern it was very turgid.
[Bm]
We weren't
getting anywhere at all and [C] around about 75 in fact it was 75 I thought nope we
need a complete change of image, a complete music overhaul this is not how I hear it
going.
We changed our name to XTC which I thought was much more [Em] [Gm] modern.
You may know some people who are a little [Gb] behind in the times.
[G] This is about a girl who is just like that.
It's called she's so square.
Take it away Johnny.
[C] We're gonna sing about modern [F] things.
We're gonna sing about radios and [G] televisions and
[C] electric [F] communication.
It's all gonna be [G] very modern.
[Cm]
[Bb] [Fm] [Cm]
[Bb] [Cm]
[Bb] [Fm] [Cm]
[Bb] [Am]
We [G] did a demo [F] session at CBS Studios in London and [E] had some cassettes made up of this and
somebody said [F] well we [E] should send these to [Bb] John Peel.
[Em] So you can [G] post it off a
[C] But he turned up [Ab] to a gig we were doing in London.
In fact I don't think I knew he was in the audience
till the end of the gig and [C] somebody said oh you know [G] that's John Peel came to [C] see it.
And I thought well I wonder if he liked the tape you know that we sent him.
I [Ab] think it was more the poster actually that we sent [C] him that he liked.
But a little while [Ab] after that he got in touch with our management and said [Dm] would the chaps like to
come and do a session for me.
[Gm] You know record a session.
[D]
Wow we don't even have a record [Dbm] deal.
[Dm] You know we don't we don't have [F] a record label or [G] anything.
[Fm] We barely have the petrol money.
[Abm] And so we went to Made of Ale and did a session.
It was [C] incredibly exciting because [Db] we hadn't been in [Ab] a [Fm] pro studio before then.
[Eb] [F] Take change of underpants you know.
[C]
You have a Peel session and the great man has put his stamp of approval [N] on you.
And then record companies were literally fighting us fighting each other to sign us.
When Go To came out we gave away an EP of dubs of some of the tracks.
And I remember he played this EP or a track or two one evening.
I accept it didn't sound right to me.
He was playing it at the wrong speed.
He played it on 33 thinking it was an album.
I loved it you know.
And I'm sat there thinking oh my God has nobody twigged this is you know
this is now going to run for about seven minutes instead of three and a half minutes.
And it's really low because it's at the wrong [E] speed.
I don't know whether he noticed or not he seemed to love it.
He probably preferred [Db] it than the correct speed.
[D]
We did a [E] session in 79 I think it was where this bright spark here had the idea to
well why don't we actually play the Peel music.
And I'll do an impression of John Peel and rattle off a load of silly bands
that are supposedly on the show that night.
Not only did he like it he actually opened the show with it.
Hello my name is John Peel.
On tonight's program I'll be playing tracks by the Sleuths,
the Slots, the Grown, Exploding Trusts, the Blues Bastards, One from the Geckos,
Hubert and his Pile Tones, The Ear, The Nose, The Throat, The Cazawarriors from Hell, The Ear
and Inevitable Groin.
So on to tonight's first guest and their XTC who are by the way here
to answer all allegations that the [Db] 1979's [E] answered to the Banner [Gb] Knives.
We'll see what you [G] think.

[G] I doubt whether we would have had a record [Am] deal.
[G]
[D] [C] Fantastic.
[G] An enormous debt of gratitude is [Am] owed from [G] XTC to John Peel.
