Hi, I'm Daniel Fisher here at Sweetwater Sound, and today I'm going to do one of my most favorite
fun things, and that is showing people something I've discovered, and that is the Sonogenic SHS500.
It's basically a beginner's tool that lets you play along with songs on your iPhone,
iOS device, and it can analyze songs on your iTunes and create chord changes.
It'll show
you the chord changes here.
It'll only let you play notes within the chord change.
All
of that's great.
Don't care about any of it.
What I care about is, is this a performance
instrument?
Can I actually take this out and use it on a gig, or at a campfire, or wherever?
And the answer is absolutely yes.
I'm really surprised.
You know, we're in an era where
nobody makes bad sound chips anymore, so even the beginner instruments sound pretty darn
good.
This one has 30 different sounds.
It also has 48 notes of polyphony.
It has multiple
effects at once in stereo.
It's got a headphone out.
It's got a line out.
It runs on six AA
batteries.
It has some really convenient features, including transpose up and down, octaves up
and down, sustain.
It's got a real pitch wheel, a real mod wheel.
You've got volume.
You have
the ability to change your filter settings, your dynamics, your reverb settings, your
chorus, and then one other DSP that you get to pick per instrument.
So, ridiculous.
The
keys, you get three octaves, and they're velocity sensitive.
And yeah, they're small keys, but
you absolutely can get used to small keys.
I mean, think about a guitarist.
You know,
he's got big frets at the bottom, closer frets at the top.
They can live with it.
You can
live with it.
And for the price of that, you get to have a keyboard that you can absolutely
just throw in your car, throw in your bag, take on a plane, and be able to jam along
with your other guitarist friends without having to bring a whole rig with you.
It also
has the ability to play to your computer via USB, and it has a breakout for five pinned-in
MIDI in and outs, and that breakout cable is included.
And to get to the 30 sounds,
you use the select knob here, and in the screen, you can see each of the patches.
You can see
your transposition, your octave, where your effects settings are at, your battery life,
and they're all great sounds.
I'm really surprised by this thing.

[Am] there's a speaker in the back that's definitely loud enough for practice.
It may be jamming
with an acoustic guitar or something, but you just take the audio out, put it into any
little battery-powered speaker, and you've got a system that can go anywhere.
Okay, so
now I have a portable MP3 player, battery-operated, stereo out to the stereo aux in, I've got
stereo out to the recorder, and I'm just going to play over it.
Now, this is not the jam
function or the Chord app going.
This is just playing audio straight through it, but it
allows me to have backing tracks, battery-powered, in my back pocket while I'm playing a battery-powered
keyboard.
