The song really [D] started out as more of a groove, where the [E] snare and the kick hit [D] at the same
time.
I had someone jot down on a piece of paper,
there's a place off Ocean [A] Avenue.
We had a little house in Florida.
It was [D] on Ocean [E] Boulevard.
The line needed to rhyme with you, so [A] I changed [F#] Boulevard to Avenue.
_ [D] That's where that _ _ _ happened.
And in truth, the song almost didn't go on the record because I couldn't even [E] finish
the chorus.
I came up with a_
_ [F#] _ _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ And I came [G] in to this control booth and I [E] sang that.
They were in the middle of doing something else and Neil, our producer, was like, stop
that, go in there, we're singing that right now.

[A] _ So at the end of each verse phrase, I come [E] in _ [F#m] with_ _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ Right?
[B] The chorus just opens up
straight [F#] _ on the same [D] three chords.
_ Up until the [A#] bridge, _ chordally, it's not as interesting,
obviously, [A] and the melody is everything [E] in this song.
Guitar-wise, the bridge is a pretty cool [A] moment for the song.
It's the first time that it
opens up to the major one chord of the song, so it kind of resolves for the first time.
_ The rhythm part is really just based around octaves, which I play.
_ _ [F#] _ _ _ It's a new progression
that you haven't heard [E] yet.
_ _ _ [G#] _ _
[A] _ _ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _
[A#] As that's happening, we put this really sparkly, jangly, clean
[A] lead part over the top, which goes one, two, three, four. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [F#] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _ [B] _
_ _ _ _ _ And then, [G#] the jangly part kind of takes a backseat and we introduce this kind of like
[A] Dick Dale surf rock kind of vibe.
The rhythm guitar goes [G#] back to the verse groove, to that
[A#] really rhythmic section, _ _
[E] but it's all open instead of being _ _ muted, and then this kind
of surf rock part comes in one, two, three, [A] four. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [E] So you have all three parts going at the same [C] time.
There's [D] that ripping, searing violin
riff that's playing over top of the outro, and we go back to that verse _ _ groove, [B] but it's
super hard, [A#] so it's one, two, we're [B] playing like_

_ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ [F#] _
We were on Cherry [A] Street, we would walk on the beach in our bare [E] feet.
We were both [F#] 18
and it felt so [A] right.
Sleeping all day, staying up [E] all _ _ _
[F#m] night.

_ If I [B] could find you [F#] now, things [D] would get _ better.
_ But we [B] could leave this [F#] town and run
[D] _ forever. _
_ _ Let [B] your wings crash [F#] down on me [D] and [F#m] take me _ [D] away.
