[E]
It could be lots of songs, huh?
[A]
Unlike this,
[F] it is, you don't mess [D] around with Jim.
Now, [Fm] it's not a 12 bar blues [A] the way I just played it right there, but it starts [B] off with
this vamp [E] in the key of E and then [Em] follows your typical chords 4 and 5 in the key of
B, A7 and [B] B7, [N] and requires like some palm muting down here, some muting with your left
hand, pumping the chords.
So I put together a lesson on this at Totally Guitars.
I'm really glad I finally got to it.
I've been meaning to do this one for years.
And we go through the chord progression and then even some variations [B] of different ways
of playing the [A] chords.
If you want to play the B7 up there, or you want to [G] get this little descending [E] bass note
run in, you can talk about playing some of the leads that [N] Jim's buddy Morrie does.
These guys were just fabulous.
If you haven't heard much of them, I really encourage you to check out some videos of
Jim Croce and Morrie Muleisen playing almost everything of Jim's, including Morrie.
And the duet guitars that they did were great.
Anyway, so if you want to get started on this, an important technique here that you have
to carry over into the song.
I'm just playing an E power [E] chord here.
And you need to get this muting technique where I'm palm muting it down here, so as
the pick is hitting the strings, the base of my hand right there is touching the [E] saddle
of the guitar.
You see that really muted, heavy sound.
But more than that, the [Em] left hand is [Am] squeezing down at the same instant to get it [E] to have
a really [G] sharp percussive attack on that [E] note.
And then it [N] cuts off right away.
So that's kind of the gist of this lesson, what has to [E] happen in order to get this whole
feel in [D] there.
So start working on that, and then if you want to learn more about You Don't Mess Around
With Jim, come check it out.
It's part of the Target program at Totally Guitars.
It's also available [N] as a separate purchase.
We have a lot of free lessons as well to get you started, but most of the detailed ones,
500 or 600 of them that are up there now, are part of our subscription program.
So I really encourage you to check it out, and there are a lot of other songs that I'm
sure you'd love there, so come visit us when you can at TotallyGuitars.com.
