Hi, I'm Andrew Gulledge.
I'm going to be showing you how to play You've Got a Friend in Me
from Toy Story by Randy Newman on the ukulele today.
The chords you need to know are C major.
You just hold down the third fret of the last string and that's it.
3. C7, same thing but the first fret of the last string. [C] 1. C7. [Am] A minor, second fret of the first string and that's it. 2 0. A minor. [A] A7, first fret of the second string and that's it. 1 0. A7. D7 is you just bar the second fret all the way across and you can even use two fingers on it if that helps. [D] And then you do the third fret of the last string so it's 2 2 2 3. D7. G7, you hold down with the middle finger the second fret of the second string [F] and then with your index finger the first fret of the third string and then with your ring finger the second fret of the [G] last string. And the first one is open so it's 2 1 2. G7. [Am] And you use that one a lot so you want to be comfortable with it. F major is [Gb] second fret of the first string, open, [F] first fret of the third string and then open. 2 1 0. F major. [E] E major, the way I play it is I bar all four strings on the fourth fret. So again you can use your index finger and then put your middle finger on top if that helps. This is definitely one you're going to need to develop hand strength for. And then with my pinky I do the eighth fret, no I'm sorry, the seventh fret of the last string so it's 4 4 4 7. E major. E7 is the same thing except it's the fifth fret on the last string not the seventh so it's 4 4 [Ab] 4 5. E7. B major, what you do is you bar the third and [A] fourth strings of the second fret like this [B] and then with your index finger, or I'm sorry, your ring finger you do the fourth fret of the first string, your middle finger you do the third fret of the next string and then the second fret you have barred with your index finger. So it's 4 3 2 2. B major. And the last one is D minor. So the way I do it, and there's a number of ways to do it, but I take my middle finger and this takes a little bit of practice but you bar the second fret of the [D] first two strings like so. So it's 2 2 and then with your index finger you hold down the first fret of the third string and then the last one's open. [Dm] So it's 2 2 1 0. D minor. [C] Those are the chords you need. The strumming pattern varies but I like to play it with a pretty heavy swing. And let's just do the first verse. You've got a friend in me, you've got a friend in me. So I do it alternating down and then instead of up I like to pick. So you go down, pick, down, pick. And it doesn't really matter which string you pick. Generally you might want to do a certain string if that's what changes. For example from a C to a C7, the only thing [Ebm] that changes is the last string. So if you're going to pick, pick that [C] one. See how you feel the change there? Down, down, pick, pick, down, pick. That's a C to a C7. Anyway, so the first verse I like to do like this. [C] Down, down, [B] pick, down, [C] down, pick, down, pick, down, pick, pick, down, [F] pick, down, down, pick, pick, down, pick, [C] down, down, pick, pick, down, [F] pick. [C] [E] [Am] And that part when you're in the E is a little tricky. [Eb] [Am] Down, pick, down, pick, down, pick, down, pick, down, [C] pick, down, down, pick, [Am] pick, pick, down, [C] pick. So that'll take a little practice. And you can mix up the strumming pattern if you like. The intro is like this. [Am] I'm sorry. You can whistle it, you can sing it, or you can just do an instrumental [C] or leave it. [Am] [D]
[G] [C] [G] It goes right into the first [C] verse. You've [G] got a friend [C] in me. [F] You've got a friend [C] in me. [F] When the [C] road looks rough [Am] ahead. [F] In your miles and [E] miles for your nice [Am] warm bed. Just [C] to remember [E] what your old pal said. [D] For you [B] got a [C] friend in me. [A] Yeah, [D] you got a friend in me. [G] [Eb] And then it goes into the second verse. For the second verse, you can see the [E] sheet music attached in the description. So another note on that E to E7 to A minor transition. Down, pick, chuck. [Am] Pick, pick, [B] down, pick. A chuck just means you're holding the strings. You're not pushing down on a fret, but you're holding them. And you're doing a down just as a percussive. Down, pick, chuck. So I'm not holding down [D] hard on the frets. I'm just touching the strings so they don't vibrate and strumming. [Eb] Down, pick, [Am] chuck. Pick, pick, chuck. And that can take a little bit of practice, but that's kind of a cool little transition. So the bridge after the second verse goes like this. [F] Some other folks might [B] be a little bit smarter than I [C] am. [B] Bigger and stronger [C] too. Maybe. [B] But none of them [Eb] would ever love you the [A] way I do. [D] It's me and [G] you, boy. [C] And it goes right into the third verse, [Abm] which you can also look at in the sheet music. [D] After the third verse, you do your typical, the end of it. Cause you got a [C] friend in me. [D] Yeah, you [G] got a friend [C] in me. [A] And I go back to A7. And then I [Db] like to slow it down a little bit. [D] Cause you got [G] a friend in [C] me. And you go right into the outro, which is the same as the intro. [Am] [C] [A] [D]
[B] [C] And you can do a little [E] ritardando, which means you just slow down at the end. [Am] And do the last home tone, C major. [Bb] So I hope you enjoy this song. I really love it. It's definitely one people like a lot. And I hope you enjoyed. Click the like if you like it. Click subscribe.
