[N] Yo, hello, it's Will Kennedy, drummer with the Yellow Jackets, live from the land of Zildjian.
Happy to be here.
Welcome to the internet, the website.
Just here to have some fun with you for a moment, demonstrate some concepts and ideas
to improve your playing and have a little fun.
What do you say?
So today we're dealing with the language in music, the language of swing, fast swing.
So in order to really accomplish that on a beautiful cymbal like this, a ride cymbal,
you really got to spend some time with your stick control.
So I recommend that you get with your instructor, it takes too much time to do it right now.
But find out what your stick holding position is, whether your traditional grip or traditional,
I'm sorry, traditional or match grip.
You can tell I'm not much of a ninja drummer.
No twirling in this one.
But get with your instructor and deal with your stick control and find ways to accurately
control the stick.
There are a variety of different things on the internet, on some DVD products, and obviously
personal instruction as well.
I'm a match grip player.
I use the fingers, incorporate the fingers in my stick swing a lot.
And in the feeling or in the interpretation or in the ability to speak this language of
swing, I feel the half time.
If the tempo is one, two, one, two, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two,
three, four, I'm feeling the half speed, right?
Because that allows me to feel relaxed and comfortable.
If I'm feeling one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, then I'm frantic and kind
of out of control.
But if I'm relaxed and feeling good within it, then I'm speaking the language properly.
Okay?
So one, two, one, two, three, [Ab]
[E]
[Ab]
four.
So again, you're going to need to spend some time on stick control to be able to get up
to that kind of speed.
And there's a basic formula that I'm using here.
Hi-hat is stroking two and four, right?
One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four, one, two, three, four.
Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh.
That's my bass, yeah?
Especially in the fast swing.
And there's certain words and phrasing that I'm using between the snare drum and bass drum.
And you can acquire that by stealing, because drummers are professional thieves.
Ha ha ha ha!
Did you know that?
We are great thieves.
That's how we get what we do.
We acquire it from the generations before us.
And to be with a company like Zildjian, for someone who has been around for as long as
they have, someone who has the history that this company has, you can learn so much by
just getting into the product and seeing what players played it.
So many things that are available to you.
So I recommend that.
Let me just leave you with some fast swing.
Can we get a little faster?
Huh?
Can you handle it?
Ha ha ha!
One, two, one, two.
