_ Hello, I'm Rick Barclay and I'm with Piano Clubhouse and today we're going to learn the song Faithfully.
It was made popular and recorded by Journey, Words of Music by Jonathan Cain.
He's the keyboard player for Journey.
This is like not only one of my all-time favorite Journey songs, but my all-time favorite song, period.
I just think it's brilliantly written and just a wonderful melodic line and just a whole line yard.
So, _ hope you enjoy learning this one as I will enjoy teaching it.
So let's just dive in.
It is in the key of B.
B major is this.
B, [Db] C sharp, D sharp, E, [Abm] F sharp, G sharp, [Bb] A sharp, B.
_ [Ab] _ _ _ [B] _ _ Okay, now there's a main_
Basically we're learning the main piano part.
We're not really going to play the melodic line per se that is being sung by Steve Perry,
but just the main piano that's being driven or [E] actually drives this whole song.
So let's just dive in.
Let me just play the first four measures and then I'll go back and explain what's happening. _ _ _
_ _ [Abm] _ _ _ _ [Db] _ _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
[B] Okay, at that point the vocals come in.
So it's a four bar intro and this main hook line with the piano, if you will, is prominent
throughout the whole piece.
So once we kind of learn this, it's going to be the basis off of everything else that we learn.
So it's B octaves.
You notice that there's a lot of movement in octaves and shifts that I'm doing in my left hand.
So we'll have to be very specific with how we approach those things. _
_ So B's your bass, B and D sharp in your right hand.
Then on count two, [Gb] you're going to hit the F sharp.
And then right after [Db] that on the E, it does the C sharp in the right hand.
[B] And then so it's B, B.
When you hit the second B, then it's [E] B and E in the right hand.
[B] And then it resolves down to B and D sharp.
And then on the very next count, that's on the A three and on the four, you hit the octave
B's [B] and then B, C [Eb] sharp, D sharp.
[B] Okay, that whole measure. _
_ _ _ _ [Ab] _ Okay, so what we've learned in the right hand at this point is pretty much going to be prominent
again throughout most of this.
So we're just basically doing different [B] bass tones as it's walking down.
So one and two E and up, three E and up, four E and [Ab] up.
Now it's G sharps in the bass.
[Abm] Can we hit the end with the B and the D sharp?
And then we come up to this octave here. _
_ [E] _ [Ab] Okay, so you notice how those_
_ _ [E] _
_ [Abm] _ _ [Ab] Then we hit the octave G sharps there.
And [Gb] then we do F sharps.
Then come up an octave. _ _ _
Hit those low F sharps.
_ _ And this time, instead of going_
It just does this B.
So let's do that F sharp portion right there. _ _
_ _ _ [E] Now here's the end.
Finally move our right hand.
So it's E octaves way down there low.
E and F sharp, or excuse me, G sharp venturing down into the bass clef with our right hand.
And then on the A of one, it's G sharp and E.
_ Count two is on the bass pedal tone down here in the E.
_ E is going to be on this A sharp.
[E]
And then get together. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ One more time. _ _ _ _
Okay, now we're ready for the verse.
[B] So back to our original position with the B.
_ _ _ Okay, at that point, it does not do that portion.
It just lays on the B.
So one, two, three, and four.
[Abm] _ _ _ _ Now that's some new [Ab] information right there.
So when we're on the G sharp, on the basically the [Abm] E of four,
it's going to be this B and then to a G sharp on the [Bb] and of four.
So let's do that measure right there.
[Abm] _
_ _ _ _ Okay, [E] next measure. _
_ Okay, so what happens here is we don't go down to the F sharp,
which was part of the intro.
It just skips that F sharp and goes directly to the E portion. _ _
Okay, and then you hold on to that.
That's going [Db] to hit the and of two and then you hold for three and four.
And then _ you're on my mind.
And [B] we're back to this.
_ _ It's a little different information.
Each time at the end of the phrase,
he adds some different piano type information happening.
So what that was was [Gb] B, C sharp, F [Ebm] sharp, D sharp and F [B] sharp. _
Okay, _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [B] now it's ready for the basically next verse portion of the verse.
So at that point, it just went down B to F sharp.
Notice I didn't do any different pedal tones with my bass.
It just stayed on that B. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ All right, for the again, the second verse, this is kind of written in an AABA format.
_ Here's the second portion.
_ _ _ _ Went back to that original B, C sharp, D.
_ [Abm] _ _ _ _
And that was what we did before.
And then [E] now the E. _ _
Here's some new information.
_ _ [Gb] The B over F sharp.
So F [B] sharp in the bass, B, [Gb] D sharp, F sharp.
One, up two and resolve on the and of two with the F sharp triad.
Still F sharp to the bass, A sharp, C sharp, F sharp.
On count four, we're leading into this basically B section.
So it's F sharp and then F sharp, A sharp.
[Gb] And those 16th notes were B, C sharp, B.
So E and now [E] you're ready for an E [Abm] to a G sharp higher and then to a B.
Okay, [E] so basically now we're just starting to play type chords, accompaniment, if you will.
Not so much melodic parts, except the second measure of each phrase.
We do have some very interesting melodic type lines.
So first measure is more cording.
Second measure is melodic intervention, so to speak.
_ That was an E, F sharp, B, E.
One, [Abm] two, count three, we go to a G sharp minor, G sharp, B, D sharp, G sharp.
_ Grab that low [B] octave there and then a _ four, we go into a B. _
B, D sharp, F sharp.
Okay, so I'll play [E] that again.
One, two, [B] four.
_ _ _ _ Okay, lots of different information there.
So F sharp, B.
F sharp stays stagnant, if you will, as we're playing these other lines as I go up with my fingers.
So that was B, E, excuse me, B sharp, B sharp, [Ab] B, C sharp.
[B] Combine the two names together, sorry about that.
B, C sharp, E, D [Db] sharp, C sharp, [B] D sharp, B.
Okay, so two E, a E, a four, and that's the rhythm.
_ _ Your bass is basically just kind of a pulsating quarter note.
_ _ Sometimes I like to do eighth notes, if you will, between the octave, pinky and thumb.
And then we go back to basically again an E, [E] _ [Abm] G sharp minor.
[B] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
[Ab] _ _ _ _ [Ab] _ _ [A] _ _
[G] _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ [Ab] _ _ [Eb] _
