[Dm] [Am]
[Gm]
Where did you write [A] Fire Escape?
Where in the [Gm] world were you when you wrote Fire Escape?
I was in London.
I lived in London in 2007.
[Dm] Where were you living?
[Am] Notting Hill Gate.
I was like right there by the [Gm] sun.
I [F] was living in LA and I [Db] just, for the first [Dm] opportunity that came up, [Am] I was like,
Yes!
Get me out of here!
[Bb] Anywhere!
Get me somewhere [F] where the sun doesn't shine.
Yeah, but you know, I'll take [Dm] it if it's like, you know, it's like LA was a false sunshine.
[Am] It still is actually.
Yeah, it still is.
I'm trying not [Eb] to bag on it anymore.
I'm so bitter.
So you wrote [G] Fire Escape in London then?
I was in London, yeah.
I was in [A] my apartment and I [Dm] was eye chatting with a friend of mine
and then all of a sudden he said, I have to tell you something.
He's like, my father [Am] passed away today.
And I was just like, holy shit, like why didn't you [Bb] tell me earlier?
So we were talking for a little while longer and he was just so kind [G] of like strong and centered
and [A] then I [Dm] spun my [Bb] chair around to the piano and I just wrote [C] it.
It was like one of those things.
[Db] It's like one of those, it was one of those [Dm] moments where it like comes out.
Yeah, it started [Bb] out kind of a [C] small song.
It was very quiet.
And then [Dbm] when we recorded [Eb] the record, all of a sudden I walked into the [Dm] studio one day
and there was a 35 [Gm] piece string orchestra on there.
I'm like, oh shit, [G] my vocals are not going to cut [Dbm] it with this.
I think somebody pissed me off [Eb] too that day when I did that [Dm] vocal,
which is always great because I'm like, press record!
And I just run in there and usually those are like the good [Db] vocal takes.
There's fire and it's [Dm] bittersweet and there's [Am] a wide range of emotion in that vocal.
[Gb] I listened [C] to it many, many times.
Damn, this is [D] a great, great vocal.
Wow, [F] thank you.
I thought you wrote it in Brooklyn because it sounds like the Paragons or something.
It sounds like one of those old doo-wop Brooklyn bands from the [Bb] 50s.
Do you know anything about doo-wop music?
I've [Dm] never known much about doo-wop, but [A] when we recorded the record,
I always wanted to put these like [Dm] vocal stacks.
And I've always liked that sort of thing, but I never actually like [F] knew that I was doing doo-wop.
Well, you're going to [D] learn about it very [F] shortly [Bb] because we're going to do a doo-wop treatment.
Ah, [Dm] that's perfect!
I figured this is [Em] right up our [A] alley, man.
Yeah.
No [D] pun intended.
[Bb]
[C] That's great when Charlie comes [Db] in on a saxophone.
I'll tell you, it's [Dm] really awesome.
[Bb] Charlie, [E] Charlie, [C] Charlie, Charlie.
Should I [Eb] start?
[Dm] Go ahead, baby.
[Bb]
[Fm] [F] [Bb] Goodbye, my love.
[F] I [Bb] forgot my song.
Goodbye, [F] my love.
[Bb] [F]
I like that left hand.
I'll do it again.
It's [C] still there.
[F]
[Bb]
[F] Goodbye, [Bb] my love.
I'll be seeing you [Gm] in the light school.
When I put my head on [C] the pillow.
I'll think [F] of you.
[Gm] My [F] [Bb] crimson love.
I wish that I could [Gm] save you from the sadness.
Honey, all around me [C] lies the madness.
[Gm] [F] What
[Dm]
[Gm] makes the price good to [Dm] want to pay?
What makes [Gm] the heart [G]
[F] go [G] on?
I wish that I could save you from the sadness.
What makes the price [Bb] good to want to pay?
[Bbm] If I [F] could save [G]
[Bb] you from the sadness.
[Bbm]
All that [F] I could do is [G] save [Bb] you.
[Bbm] If you'd [F] gone [G]
away.
[Bb] [Bbm]
You'd gone [F] away.
My [Bb] bleeding heart.
I'd be the [Gm] same without you.
All the things, all the shit that we've been through.
[F] I know.
[Dm]
Love [Gm] makes the price good enough [Dm] to want to pay.
But it don't make the [Gm] [G] hurt [F] go away.
[G]
I wish that I [Bb] could save [Bbm] you [F] from [G]
[Bb] the sadness.
[Bbm] All that I [F] could do is [G] save [Bb] you.
[Bbm]
If you'd [F] gone [G]
away.
[Bb]
[Bbm] You'd [F] gone away.
All [Dm]
[Gm]
the things, [Dm]
[Gm] [G]
[F] all the [G]
shit [Bb] [Bbm] that we've been through.
Love makes the price [F] good enough to want to pay.
But it don't make [G]
[Bb] the hurt go away.
[G]
All that [F] I could do is [G] save [Bb] [Bbm] you.
If you'd gone [F] away.
[G] If you'd gone [Bb] [Bbm]
[F] away.
