[E] gonna hold my body down.
Ain't [A] no [G#] [C] grave [F#]
gonna hold my body down.

[Dm] Ain't no [C] grave [F#] gonna [Dm] hold my [E] body down.
When I [Em] hear [C] that trumpet sound, [D] I'll be getting up and walking [F]
around.
Cause there ain't no [C] grave [F#]
gonna [Dm] hold my [Am] body down.
[D]
I sit and I look [D#m] way [G] over Jordan.
[F#] What do you think I see?
I saw a band of holy [Em] angels, and they were coming [E] after me.
[D#] Ain't [C] no grave gonna [F#] hold [Dm] my [E] body down.
[C]
[B] Ain't no [C] grave gonna [D] [Dm] hold my [E] body down.
[Am] When I [Em] hear that [Am] trumpet sound, I'll [D] be jumping up out of the [C] ground.
[Em] Ain't no grave [D] gonna [Dm] hold [Am] my body down.

[D] [F]
[Em] [Am] [D#]
[C] [E] [G] [Am]
I go [G#] down [Am] yonder Gabriel, [G#] put your [Am] foot on the land and [G] the sea.
[G#] [Am] But [G#] don't you blow [G] your trumpet.
[Am] [E] Don't you give to me.
[E] Ain't no [C] grave [D] gonna [Dm] hold my [Am] body [C] down.
[D]
[Dm] Ain't [C] no grave gonna [D]
hold [B] my [E] body down.
[Am] When you hear [F] that trumpet [Am]
sound, I'll [D] be getting up and walking [F]
around.
[C] Ain't no grave, [D]
[Gm] ain't [Am] no grave, [D]
ain't no grave gonna [Am] hold,
[C] [F#]
[Dm] ain't no grave gonna hold, [D]
[Bm] ain't no [C] grave [D] gonna [F] hold [E] my [A] body down.
[Am]
So that was an African American spiritual tune called Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down.
Now when I was thinking about arranging this for a guitar,
like a lot of these tunes in the songbook,
these are old songs, they've been recorded and played many different ways.
So when I was thinking about how I wanted to approach this,
I usually go for, I sort of think of touchstones [F#] in my own reference points of [D#] guitar playing and music.
And so in this case, I was thinking, well what if I kind of went a little sort of Merle Traversy, Chet Atkins-y
in the background for my accompaniment on the guitar.
So [Am] that's why I got this little, I [G] decided to put the song in [Am] A minor.
[E] And then I had this little bass line.
[C]
[D] [Bm] [C]
[D] [B] And then [F] I was using this right hand pattern.
[Am]
So I'm just using that picking pattern, [A] thumb, [F] [Am] pinch, finger.
[C] [D] [Am]
[D] [Gm]
[Am] [Em]
So that sort of gave me [D#] that flavor that I wanted of [C#] kind of Merle Traversy sort of sound.
And then since I had gone with that descending bass line, chromatic bass [E] line,
[B] in the chorus, [F#] the part where I'm singing Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down,
then when I was singing [Em] the verses, I thought maybe I would like to keep some sort of consistency
in that chromaticism [C#] of what I was doing.
So I did this in the [Am] verses.
[E] [C]
[F#]
[Em] [G] So you see I've got this line [A] going down.
[G#] [G] [G#] Coming back up.
[A] So I tried to get a certain consistency in feeling between the verse and the chorus.
But I still wanted to do something that differentiated them.
So I didn't use the same chromatic [E] bass line.
But I used sort of a [D#] variation in the different parts.
So get out your music.
Take a look at that.
Play along with me.
And I hope you have fun with that.
