The Sweetest Blues Turnaround in E chords
Start Jamming...
Okay, this one we're going to call Up and Down.
This is a cool blues turnaround in the
key of E.
Take a listen to it and maybe you can figure out why [G] we're calling it Up and [E] Down.
[A] [C] [Em] [B]
[E] Alright, this is really [Gm] exciting to [F] me and it was one of those turnarounds that I learned.
I stayed up all night just to try and get this thing down.
So if it doesn't come easy
at first, [E] have no [N] fear.
I mean, I literally worked on this for a couple of weeks straight
just to get it down.
The cool sound that you're hearing is the fact that the bass line and
the melody are going in opposite directions.
The melody [G] is [Db]
[C] [B] descending while the [E] bass [Ab] [A]
[Bb] [B] [C] is
ascending.
So we've got some contrary motion there and it really adds a cool touch to the
piece.
So let's take a look at the actual notes and see if we can't get this down.
[Ab] I'm
starting off by [E] hitting my two [G] E's, one right after another.
[E] I'm going low to high.
And
then I'm getting in this position, which is putting my third [C] finger on the fourth fret
[Ab] of the E string, low E string, and my middle finger [D] on the third fret of the [Em] B string.
Okay?
[E] So, and then here's what we're going to do.
[Em] I'm pinching these two, so I'm playing
these two notes together, the ones that [Ab] I've fretted, [E] the E and the B string.
And then
I'm going back to this open E.
Okay?
And then [Eb] I'm going to move my second finger back,
my middle finger, back to the second fret on the B string and I'm going to leave the
A open, the A string, [A] and do [Eb] that same pattern where I'm [A] pinching these two and then hitting
the E.
[Am] Then I'm going to move back [C] one more fret with my second finger to the first [E] fret
on the B string.
I'm going to put my first finger, I'm going to kind of reach over here
and put it on the first fret of the A string and do [G] the same little picking [C] pattern.
And
then I'm simply going to come [B] to the [Em] B note here.
So, so far we've [E] got this.
[A] [C] [Em] And I'm going
to pick the B string open, by the way, when [B] I do that.
[Am] Okay?
So practice that.
Let's look
at that [E] part real slow and then we'll figure out how to end this thing.
[Ab] [C] [E] One more time.
[A] [C] [B] [Am] It's super cool to get that [Ab] down and to bring that up to tempo.
[E] [A] [C] [Em]
[E] [A] [C] [Em] [Eb] Pretty cool.
And then I'm
[A] ending this just by going, [Eb] [E] [A] [C] [Em]
[E] I'm hitting the open A [Am] string with my [G] thumb and then I'm getting
in [C] this C9 position, which I'm not playing the 6th string and then I've got the third
fret, first fret, I'm sorry, third fret, second fret, third fret, [Bb] third fret.
And then I'm
muting out [Am] this E string.
So no E's, just the middle [E] four strings.
And it's kind [C] of
a somewhat familiar shape.
[E]
[C] And you can play this differently, but I like to fret it out
just [C] like this.
So I've got 3, 2, 3, 3.
And then I'm picking that [B] and then [Gb] bringing it
back.
So, [E]
[A] [E] [C] [B] [E]
all right.
And that's up and down.
Let's hear it one more time.
Pretty slow.
And then we're going to play it one more time up to speed and let you have at it.
So here
we go.
Here we go slow.
