[Ab] Hey everyone, it's James here from [C] goodguitarist.com and in today's lesson we're going to show
you how to play Have You Ever Seen the Rain [N] by Credence [Ab] Clearwater Revival or CCR.
One of my favorite tunes.
This one is super easy, just uses [C] some basic open chords aside from the F bar chord.
And if you need any help with the chords, especially that F bar chord, I recommend checking
out our ebook.
It's free to all of our subscribers.
There's a link down below.
And it goes over all the basics, chord switching, chord progressions, strumming, all that [Fm] stuff.
So if you need any help with that, please check it out.
And if you've checked [C] out some of our lessons before and you find that you enjoy learning
with us, I'd really appreciate it if you took the time to help support us.
That can be as simple as hitting the thumbs up below, subscribing to our channel, and
leaving a comment, especially if you have any questions.
I try to answer the comments at least a couple times a week.
We'll start off by learning the verse.
And to play the verse we only need two chords.
C and G.
[G]
[C] Now that's pretty much it.
So just practice switching between those two chords.
And once you're good with that, we can add a strumming pattern.
And the strumming pattern for this song goes like this.
[A] [Ab]
So that's the same thing twice.
[C] It's just down, up, mute, up.
Really slowly.
Down, up, mute, up.
And for that mute, I'm just releasing [Gb] the pressure with these fingers and just letting
them [Am] kind of droop.
[Ab] And that just mutes all [E] the strings.
[C] Down, up, mute, up.
And we'll do that two times like that.
And that's our [Eb] entire strumming pattern.
So [Ab] we're going to play that now just over the C and G chords the same way that we do
it in the verse.
You can just watch the first time and then maybe join the second time.
Or if you're down, you can just try it right away.
Anyways, let's play this together a little bit slower than the original recording.
One, two, three, four.
[C]
[G]
[C]
[G]
[C]
[Fm] For the chorus, we're going to need two new chord shapes.
[Am] We're going to need A minor and F.
[F]
[Ab] And if you need any extra [F] help with that F chord, we show you an easier version [D] in our free ebook.
So just check that out.
There's [Ab] a link down below.
And for the most part, the chorus is really straightforward, just like the verse.
We're just, you know, strumming some chords.
But there's one bit where we do a bit of a bass line walk down.
So let's just go over that really quick.
We start off on our C chord.
[C]
Then switch [G] to G over B.
Then [Am] A minor.
And now here we switch to A minor over G.
So we're on our A minor [Gb] chord and we're just going to [G] move our third finger here.
So it's kind of like a [Ab] C chord, but not quite.
We're [C] putting it on the lowest string.
Just practice that a few times.
One, [G] two, three, [Am] four.
One, two, [C] three, four.
And for strumming that part, it's really simple.
We just divide the pattern equally over each chord.
[G]
[Am]
[G] And it's really straightforward.
[Gb] Nice and [C] slow.
[G]
[Am] [C]
[Ab] So once you've practiced that a bit, we can play this a little bit slower than the original recording.
Let's do it together.
One, two, [E] three, [F] four.
[G]
[C]
[G] [Am]
[C] [F]
[G]
[C]
[G] [Am]
[F]
[G]
[C]
[Ab] So there's one more bit to learn, and that's the [B] intro.
This is kind of optional.
That's why I didn't show it at the very beginning.
We start off on the A minor chord and we do [Am] a quick down-up.
And it goes.
So that's like one, two, [Ab]
three, [Am] four.
And then one and two and three and four [F] and one and two and three and [C] four.
And a one and two and three and [G] four and.
Then we go to a G chord.
And [Ab] here we can either play the chord or we can play the bass line, which goes.
[E] [G]
[A] So that's just the A [G] string, third fret of the lowest [E] string, open, [G] open, third fret.
[E] [G]
[C] And then we go to our C chord.
One time.
And then we go.
[A] So
[G] that's third fret, same note that C [C] was, you know, the lowest note.
[B] Second [G] fret, open, open, third fret of the lowest string.
[C] And then the song starts.
So that intro with the bass line stuff in it sounds like this.
[Am] Really slow.
[F]
[C]
[G] [E]
[C]
[A]
[G] [C] And then we would start the [A] verse.
So that's how you [Ab] play Have You Ever Seen the Rain by CCR.
Really cool tune, really simple chords.
The intro and all that stuff is kind of optional with those bass lines.
You don't have to do [F] it.
It's just something I thought might be [Ebm] fun to add to the song.
Otherwise, just try really hard.
Focus on that verse and that chorus.
Getting the strumming all together.
[C] You know, getting that muted stroke to be nice and clean.
And this should be a pretty easy one to put together.
Anyways, I hope you had fun with this one.
Have fun practicing and I'll see you next week.
