[G] [D] [Eb] Jinks here for PNP.
[N] Today's update is dedicated to Chris Cornell.
[G] On the night of May 17, 2017, it was reported that Cornell committed suicide by hanging
himself in a Detroit hotel room just hours after his band Soundgarden had performed.
He was 52 years old.
It's another tragic loss for the music community, and today we just want to take some time to
look back at some of [Em] our favorite Chris Cornell moments.
He'll be remembered for his music with Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple the Dog, and as a solo artist.
But some of his finest work came when he was covering other artists' work.
Chris had an unmistakable voice that could transform any song, and he sang with such
conviction that even when he was singing someone else's words, it felt entirely genuine.
He's delivered dozens of covers over the past decades, and these are three essentials that
we'll always come back to.
Billy Jean Michael Jackson's Billy Jean is a dance-friendly
classic, where Cornell's version pulls out the darker side of the song.
Studio version appears on his 2007 album, Carry On, in an acoustic rendition from 2006's
Unplugged in Sweden.
It's jaw-dropping.
[Dm] [Am] [Bm] [Am] [D]
[Em] Nothing [N] Compares to You
In 2015 at the SiriusXM studio, Cornell was joined by a cellist and a guitarist for an
intimate cover of Nothing Compares to You.
The song was written by Prince and made famous by Sinead O'Connor, but Cornell took it to
a whole other level.
This was the last time we get to write about Chris Cornell on Pigeons and Planes while
he was [C] alive.
[G]
[Am] [E]
I Will Always Love You
If your voice isn't phenomenal, you shouldn't even try this song.
Dolly Parton wrote and recorded the touching song in 1974, and Whitney Houston brought
new power to it for her 92 version, which is one of the top 10 best-selling singles
of all time.
Cornell took on I Will Always Love You during a performance at an Obama rally in 2012.
And it's [G] stunning.
[C] [G] Let us know what your favorite Chris Cornell moments are in the comment section.
And if you aren't familiar, take some time out to give his music a true listen.
His contributions to music at large will always be appreciated, and he will be missed.
Rest in peace, Chris Cornell.
