[C] What's going on guys?
[G] I stand [D] with arms [G] high, heart abandoned,
live long [D] the one [G] who gave me love.
I stand, my soul, Lord, to you surrender,
I give it [D] to you.
What I want to go over in this lesson is the top three things
[C] that I wish someone would have taught me when I was first learning guitar.
[G] I've been playing for about 15 years now.
I didn't play for a long time there at first, but on and off for about 15 years.
And these are the top three things I wish I would have been shown.
The first thing is the alternate way of playing the C chord.
If you watch my other videos, you know I go from G here
and just move these top two fingers down for C.
The reason being, when I first started learning the guitar,
they taught me a G first, [Em] then the E minor, [D] then the D, [C] then the C chord.
[G] I had so much trouble going from, [D]
say, D [G] to C or G to C,
because you can see you're taking all your fingers off the guitar
and having to do [C] the climbing method.
So there's the climbing, E minor to [D] climb.
And I [A] really struggled with that.
So any [C] song that had a C chord in it, I couldn't [G] play,
because I would be strumming along [D] and [C] [E] it sounded like that.
So I wish [G] someone would have shown me, until you get more experience with the guitar
and [Eb] your ear better trained and your hand-eye coordination down
and your finger to brain calculated and all [G] that stuff,
that you can go G to C.
[A] So that's the first thing, the [G] C chord played just by moving the two top fingers down.
It has a little bit of a different sound, but not that much.
The second thing is about strumming.
I wish someone would have taught me that strumming is about timing.
It's not about down, down, down, up, down, [D] up, down.
[G] What happens?
[D]
[G] [C] It doesn't matter if you mix up the strumming.
The key is that it's about timing.
It's about knowing whenever you get to the chord change,
be in a position with your [D] strumming that you can switch.
[C] So it's
[G] I stand, [D] I'm [Bm] standing, heart of heaven.
[G] And I [D] want you, [G] baby.
[C] I [G] stand, my soul goes to you.
What I'm doing there is if I was maybe teaching a lesson,
at first I would sing down, down, up, down, up, switch, down, up, down, up, [D] switch.
But it sounds too mechanical.
[D]
It's better [G] to
I stand, I'm standing, heart of heaven.
And I [D] want [G] you, baby.
[C] So sometimes I'm just going down, [G] down, up really fast to switch.
I'll just palm mute.
[D]
[G] Hammer [A]-ons and pull-offs.
There's so many things you can [C] do to switch up your strumming
[B] that when you get [G] into just the down, down, up, down, up,
[A] you're listening too much and you're [F] thinking too much,
is my hand up or [A] down?
Is it up, up, no, down.
[B] It gets too confusing.
It's [N] about timing.
It's keeping that internal beat in your head.
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three.
And that is vital to strumming.
Everybody asks me all the time, [G] what's the strumming pattern?
Try to [C] work on your timing.
[G] [D]
[G] See, all those have the same [D] beat, same number of beats per chord.
It's just the strumming is different on all those chords.
So that's the first thing is the C chord.
The second thing is strumming is about timing.
The third thing is the good old capo.
You've seen me do this in other lessons.
But particularly [F] when you're new, to play like [C] this
[G] or any kind of [E] bar chord is
[Gb] [E] very [Abm] tough.
But to play especially most of your praise and [G] worship songs
or different maybe country [Gb] songs you hear on the radio,
you just pop [Bb] that capo on there and play your song.
Play it again.
[C]
[Gm] [C] [Bb]
[Gm] [G] [Bb] [Eb]
[G] [Bb]
[Gm] [F]
[G] [Bb] [B] You can go anywhere up and down that capo, playing the same four [Db] chord.
[Gb]
[Bbm] [Bb] [Db]
[Bb] I'm trading my pain.
[Gb] I'm laying [Bbm] down [Ab] the joy of [Db] the Lord.
[Bbm] [Bb] I'm [Ab] trading [Eb] my sin.
I'm trading my [Bb] shame.
[Db] I'm laying [Bbm]
down the [Ab] joy of the Lord.
[Bb] [Ab] So you can switch all the keys [N] just by using the capo and the same four chords.
C chord, strumming is timing.
Use that capo to switch the keys.
My top three things that I wish someone would have taught me
when I was first learning guitar.

If you need encouragement, read this morning Romans chapter 8,
verses I think 38 and 39.
Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ.
It's powerful.
It'll get you pepped up.
I don't care what you're going through, what kind of sickness you have,
what kind of bad job you have, bad relationship,
what kind of financial troubles you're having.
Romans 8, nothing, absolutely nothing can separate us from the [Eb] love of Christ.
