[Am] Hey everybody, Corey at Gemini [D] Guitar.
[E] Today's lesson we're focusing on some simple chord
voicing changes to come up with some sort of hair metal, traditional metal type of riffs.
This one will be in the key of G major, so I'm just going to show you the ingredients
and then you can experiment with these and come up with your own ideas.
So the ingredients that we're going to be using are E5, [F#m] [C] C5
[D] and D5.
What we're going
to do with these is change them around a bit so that they sound more interesting.
So with
the E5 there we can augment the 5th.
That means there that the B note on the 9th fret
4th string gets raised a semitone up to the C [C] note.
You [E] often hear these types of ideas.
With the C5 there we can flatten the 5th so the G note, 5th fret on the 4th string gets
lowered a semitone.
This [F] becomes the F sharp [C] with the C note.
And that's [D] basically a C
flat 5.
It's the tritone interval.
Now with the D5 there we could use that or we could
make it sound a bit more melodic and introduce the F sharp note instead of the A note.
So
the A is the 5th, the F sharp is the 3rd.
And what we can also do there is raise the
F sharp a semitone to get a sort of suspended sound.
You could also think of it as a sort
of double stop G5 with the G on the top and the D on the bottom.
The other thing we could do with
that too is we could actually use all three.
The D major type idea, [G] the sus type thing [D#] [D] and the
power chord.
That works pretty cool too.
Okay so basically what we can do with this is use an
Iron Maiden style chord progression.
They use this one a lot in their songs.
So we can [E] start with an
[C] E, go to C.
[D] [F#] And you can just have a tool around with the different variations that I showed you
before.
Okay to end things off basically I'm going [E] to play something for you that you can have a
look at and then you can come up with your own ideas.
This one's got a drum beat behind it so
it sounds pretty cool.
