[N] This is the first, this is a prototype actually,
the first nylon string Holloway harp guitar.
So the harp guitars were made in Chicago between 1890 [D#] and 1910
or so, and they pretty much, by 1920,
they pretty much stopped being made commercially.
Gibson and the Larson [D] Brothers made the harp guitars.
[Em] So now, just recently,
Holloway Harp [F] Guitar Company has started building them again.
And so being made in more of an assembly line fashion,
these are much less expensive.
And I'm very [E] happy with the tone of that.
Isn't that lovely?
And I think that this extra resonating chamber just makes the regular part
of the guitar sound prettier.
And these are still strings and this is nylon?
They're all nylon.
Yes.
Those are nylon too?
Yes, they're nylon, you know, wound with silver wine.
And then [B] these are just extra heavy bass strings
[G#m] [E] going down in the scale
or whatever [C#] notes I need.
And I asked [C] for this to be built with half-step tuners.
[C#m] So this is my [C#] addition to the harp guitar.
Is that [B] not normal on a harp guitar?
No, but now some builders have caught on.
They're starting to make them now with the half-step tuners.
And I really like that because that allows you to play
in different keys more easily.
And sometimes I'll use a half-step right in the middle of a piece.
So I'll do one that I call View from Space.

I'm wondering if you can tell us if you have a tip or a secret about how
to get such stunning harmonics out of a nylon string guitar like that.
Thank you.
Well, my [G#] technique is a little bit different than I'm doing.
I learned this technique.
Now, this instrument I tuned a step high, by the way.
If you're [B] playing along with me, put your capo on the second fret.
So it'll be where I am.
And this song is tuned down to a low D here,
if you had your capo on the second fret.
[Em]
And so what I'm doing [A] is [F#m] every [E] other note is a harmonic.
So one note is just touching the 12th fret and then plucked with the thumb.
And then with this finger, you can play the ring finger [A] on the third string,
then the harmonic on the fifth, [C#] ring finger on the [B] second string,
harmonic on the fourth, and then the ring finger on the first string.
So it's a little trick.
Only every other note is a harmonic.
[Am] And then you can double back.
[E] Now, left hand is free.
So [C] as you move up one fret here, [Gm]
[G] you move up one fret
with your right hand.
[E] So just as long as you touch lightly and exactly on that [Em] spot and pluck,
it's a piece of cake.
But what I do in View from Space and in some others
is I figure that I've got two fingers that I can use here easily,
the middle and the ring.
[A] So I'm plucking [B] one harmonic, and then I play two natural notes.
[Em] And then [F#] I do the next one, and then play two natural notes
the opposite direction.
So if [C#] I'm in 4-4 time, [E] so I'll just do it on open strings.
So [F#m]
I do one harmonic, two notes.
One harmonic, two notes the opposite direction.
And then just one regular one.
And [F#] in the case of View from Space, it's a 9-8 time. [F#m] Yeah.
[Em] I do sets of three coming down and then sets of two coming back.
So even though they all sound like harmonics, actually only one
out of every three is a harmonic coming down.
One out of every two is a harmonic coming back up.
