most enjoyed playing on was the old Sawin' on the Strings.
And it was originally, it's neat,
because it was originally sung by Tony Rice
on an old record, and now of course Allison's singing it.
But, and Tony Rice and I played together,
basically when we were kids.
I mean, I realized he was 19, I was 18.
We were in a band called the Bluegrass Alliance.
And we were roommates, and so for us guys
to be back together to back Allison, it's a special thing.
J.D. Crowe and David Grissman,
it would take a book that thick to cite my heroes.
A lot of them modern jazz heroes.
When I first heard the music that was being created
by Grissman and Richard Green and John Carlini,
I thought, this is the sound.
In other words, it's the sound I've been hearing
in my head probably since I was a kid,
but nobody had played it.
And then all of a sudden, here it was.
There was this group of guys that were ex-hippies
that were taking bluegrass instruments
and using strictly bluegrass instrumentation
and creating an incredible hybrid
of swing, string jazz, and bluegrass.
I had an idea with an earlier album of mine
to take the sound of Grissman's music
and see what I could find in terms of songs
with incredible poetic value,
and then put those two things together
and see what happened.
And the result was a couple of albums
that I think Allison cites as being ones
that [B] put her on the launch pad
to want to go out and do this music.
So she's still doing it.

[E] [B] Let me reach out and touch you,
[F#] let me hold you for a while.
[G#m]
[B] I'm the world [C#] and how I long to see [E] you smile.
[B]
There's a shadow on the [F#] moon
and the waters here below
do [D#m] not shine the way [F#] they should.
[E] And I love you just in [B] case you [E] didn't [G#m] know.
[B] Let it go, [F#]
[G#m] let it happen [B] like it happened once before.
[E]
[C#] [B] It's a wicked wind [D#m] and it chills me to the bone.
[G#m] And if you do [B] not believe me,
[E] come and gaze upon the shadow of your door.

[B] Won't you lie down by me, baby?

[G#m] I [B] will tell you, [C#] still I do not [E]
understand.
[B] Is it me or is it you?
[F#] Or the shadow of a dream?
[D#m] Is it wrong to be in love?
[E] Could it be the finest love I've ever [B] seen?
Set it free, [F#]
[G#m] let it happen [B] like it happened once [E] before.
[B] [C#] [B] It's a wicked [F#] wind and it chills me to the bone.
