Let's do it.
I have my strat tuned
down a half step, so I'm playing this in C sharp minor.
He did a lot of his writing in
C sharp minor and E [Cm] major.
[N] It's pretty common for him.
I don't know if he did this in C
or C sharp.
You can choose the key depending on where your guitar is tuned.
I like it down
a half step because the strings are looser.
What I'm doing is on the 14th fret B string,
I'm pulling up.
It's a whole step.
I pull up with all three fingers, so I have the [D] strength.
[Eb] Pick once [Ab] and [N]
get three notes out of that first pick.
Then pick again.
[Bm]
Come down.
[C] To
end it, drop your hand down so that your third finger is at the 12th fret and start
with a pull.
[Bm]
[C] [Gb] [D] One more time, slow.
[Gb] [C]
[Ebm] Now you're in a [E] perfect position to play the rest of
the lick because you have, in the middle of the phrase, dropped your hand down to the
new position.
The next piece is here in C sharp minor pentatonic.
I'm going to break
the rest of the lick up into [G] four sections.
Here's the [Cm] first one.
[Gm] Fret 11, string 4, we
slide up with [Em] our third finger.
[Ab] Then fret 9, string 3, index finger.
[N] Then with my third
finger on fret 11, string 3, I pull up a whole step.
Use these two fingers to push so we
get the strength.
Then barring on fret 9, strings 1 and 2 with my index finger, I finish
that part of the phrase.
[Cm] [F] I [Cm]
missed it there a little bit.
Like that.
[C] The next piece of
the phrase, [N] we're on the second string, fret 12, third finger, pull up a whole step.
[A] Then
walk down pentatonically, 9, [Gm] 11, 9.
[E] Let's put those [Cm] two together.
[G] [Cm]
[G] The next phrase starts
with something we just did, [Cm] which is this thing.
[E] We pull up once again from 11 to 13
on string 3 [F] and then [Eb] bar across [C] strings 1 and 2 on fret 9.
Then we do a pentatonic walk
down starting on fret 12, string [F] 2.
[C] [B] It's [Am] 12, 9, pull up to [F] 13, [Eb] 11, [Am] 9, [Eb] 11.
[F] [C] [Bb] All these
notes have equal [C] value time-wise.
I'm going to review the whole lick.
[Cm]
[Ab] [Eb] One more time, [C] a
[N] little bit of a walk down.
At the very end, we add on, which is a pull first on fret 11
up to 13 on string 3.
You pull it and choke it.
What I do is I mute by grabbing the string
over here and grabbing the string over here because [Eb] you don't want to drain.
It stops.
The note actually [D] stops.
[Em] You stop it by letting your finger off the string here and then you
hold it gently over the fret so it doesn't make any noise.
I actually mute it over here
with my index finger at the same [N] time.
I have a double muting going on.
Then I hit this
last note and vibrato it really heavy, [Eb]
string 3, fret 9.
The coolest part of this is the
slide [Abm] up to I believe fret 18.
[N] You have to aim for this and it's hard to get accurate.
It feels really [F] good when you nail it.
[B] [N] Then I start my solo with one of his signature
riffs.
