This is more of a exercise than a lick to learn.
But it's in [Gb] the Alvin Lee style.
So what we're gonna do, you can take this lick
and just the lick, the beginning of this exercise
is a good lick, which would be at your 10,
10, eight, and using 10, eight, 10, eight, 10, 11
on your B and your E.
[Bb] [G] That in itself is just a cool blues lick.
[Bb] [E]
But what we're trying to do here is do the Alvin Lee thing
where we're gonna play a cool blues lick very fast
using a bunch of triplets.
So what we're gonna do that lick is this.
[Bb] [Cm] So there's gonna be a pull off here, [D] pull off here,
pull off, [Eb] slide down one fret to the G, triplet pull off.
That same pattern [C] here, we're gonna do up here.
Triplet pull offs on D, A, go back to that pattern.
[Am]
And if you're going like, what's that all about?
Well, you make a sound like this.
[E]
[A] [E]
[G] [A] [E]
Which is Alvin Lee in his style.
There were, I've seen him, there are occasions
when he's not going at that blistering speed
and he would play a lick like that.
[Bb]
But [D] he was also, you know, about speed.
So [C] [A] [Gb]
if you want a good exercise
about emulating his style with triplets,
[N] I would practice this slow.
[Gb] And then with double picking,
which is to say up and down very quickly,
[N] then I would play that pattern at a higher speed.
But this is, I think, a good exercise for what he did.
Remember this first pull off that we're doing.
[D]
You repeat it here on the G, or the D and the G.
And you repeat again here on the low E and A.
[N]
[Am]
Anyway, that's a cool, it's not so much a lick
as it is a exercise.
And where we're playing here,
the box that we're playing here would be in the key of A.
But it's a cool exercise to kind of get your hand,
or head, around what he was doing.
Hope you enjoy, bye bye.
