Hello my friends Ken Mercer here in this video today
I'm going to show you how to play a basic folk picking pattern this was used by Paul Simon to play the boxer
We're playing a C chord with a G bass
Using the thumb the index finger and the middle finger.
I'm using my little finger just to rest
So I've got a reference point, and I'm going to play a very common picking technique
And this is used a lot of folk music Paul Simon used it to play the boxer
And it goes like this
[Bb] So I'm playing the [C] a string with the thumb
the D string with the thumb
the G string [E] with the index [G] finger
[Gm] Then I'm going to the low e with the thumb
[G] Then I'm playing the B with the middle finger
[C] then I'm playing the D with the [E] thumb and
Then the G with the index [G] finger
So all together I have
[C]
And if we start to speed it up
So you start off really slow, [Cm] and then when you start to get the the hang of the pattern just [F] gradually build up your speed
If you're playing the boxer of Simon and Garfunkel
You've got [C] you start off with the C chord
I am just a poor boy
[G] So [A] we change to an a minor we play the same pattern I
[Am]
[G] Have squandered G
same pattern again
for a pocketful
[C] Back to the C
[N] the picking pattern remains the same throughout those chords, so
Once you get that pattern you'll be able [C] to change chords and then and link them together by walking the bass
