Hey, [Bb] this is Rob from Power Practicing and [B] today I'd like to talk about playing modal [Bb] bebop licks.
The first two are going to be based on [C] C Ionian [Db] and D Dorian.
[Gb] Now these licks [Db] are going to start out in [C] half time in eighth notes and then [Bb] proceed
into sixteenth notes.
[Gb] Once it goes full speed, [Bb] only a portion of the lick is going to be played and then [C] after
four repetitions, a little bit more is going to be [A] added to it so that you're progressing
[E] towards learning the entire lick at full [Bb] speed.
As always, try [E] to master each [Bb] segment of the lick before you move on to the next level.
[C] Now [Bb] because it is a bebop lick, it's not [Em] directly in the scales.
There are passing tones [Db] and there are enclosure techniques and other things that bebop players
actually use when they're [Bb] playing.
So it's more than just the scale.
[C] So what [Db] I'd like you to [Bb] do is see if you can figure it out [C] by ear.
[Db] If not, [C] look at the tabs.
But once you get the [G] lick down, try to play each segment [Bb] of the lick [C] until you can play
it four [Gm] times in a row without [Bb] making a mistake and then [Ab] move on to the next [Gm] segment of the lick.
