Chords for Blues Guitar Lesson - Hollywood Fats Turnaround in Key of E - Part 1

[F#] Today I'm here to talk to you about a really [F] cool _ turnaround in the key
of E. _
This is something you can play over a general shuffle or a march or country blues.
I learned this from _ a tune called Cheese [N] Dynamite, which I was just playing there off of the
Hollywood Fats Band record by the great Hollywood Fats.
If you don't own that record, you've
got to get it, so just [F] stop this video, go get it, and then come back.
_ _ I've also been
told that this lick may actually be a Tampa Red lick originally.
_ I haven't found it yet.
_ I'll keep looking at it.
If I do find it, I'll post in the comments [E] down below, so I'll
let you know if I find out [D#] _ where_
if indeed this lick is a Tampa Red lick.
But anyway,
like I said, this is a great alternate thing to play over an _ _ [D] _ E blues.
Obviously it's the
turnaround, so once we get to the 5, [D#] I think [E] something you'd normally hear, _ say we're in
the key of E, _
_ [A] _ [B] 5, _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ [E] _ _ _ that's kind of a more typical thing we'd hear _ with a general shuffle in
the key of E.
This is something that's a little more unique.
It's got a little more movement.
It hits a lot of the chord tones, but it's got a lot of cool _ ins and outs, which is _ just
cool.
It's a great lick.
So here we go. _ _
When we [G] get to the [E] 5, so we're in the key of E,
_ [G] _
[E] _ _ _ _ [A] _ [B] walk up from the [G] G.
So you've got a G here on your _ _ 6th string, 3rd fret.
[A] _ [C] _ [B] _ [C] G, [A] then open
A, _ _ _ [A#] 1st fret, _ 5th string.
[B] _ Then to the B on the 2nd fret, [C] 5th string.
So [A] A, [A#] _ _
[B] Bb, B.
_ _ _ [G] _ [A] _
[B] _ So
that gets you right to the downbeat of the 5 chord.
Then you're going to go all the way
up and play an octave up on the B string.
Open [G] B string.
[A] _ [B] _
_ [A] _ _ Then play 2nd fret, _ 3rd string,
[Bm] which is the 7th [F] chord tone, flat 7th chord tone of the [G] B7 we're [A] playing here. _
[B] _ [A] _ _ So that's
what we've got [G] so far.
[A] _
[A#] _ [B] _ _ Open [A] B, _ 2nd fret, 3rd string.
_ _ Then [F#] _ _
we're going to play the F sharp,
_ [B] which is the _ 5th chord tone of this _ [F#m] B7 chord.
But that's going to be 4th fret, _ 4th string.
_ [Bm] So we've got [G] this so far.
[B] _ _
[A] _ [F#] _ _ _ [G] _ [A] _ [B] _ [G]
[F#m] Then _ _ [D] open D, _ _ _ _ kind [D#] of a little chromatic, up to the _ 3rd of the
chord, which is going to be the 1st fret _ _ of the 4th string, [B] Eb.
And then _ up to the root,
which is 2nd fret, 5th string.
[G] So we've got this so far.
[A] _ [B] _ _ [A] _ [D] _ _ [B] _ _
_ _ [G] [A] So [E] _ [B] _ _ [A] _
[D] _ _ [B] _ _ _ that's over the 5 chord. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ [A] _ [B] _ [D] _
_ [B] _ Really
hitting a lot of the chord tones there.
Just great, great, great lick.
And then when we
get to the [A] 4, _ what it's going to do, instead of _ _ _ hitting the root there, it's going to slide
[B] from the _ 5 _ chord, the root of the 5 chord, which is the 2nd fret, 5th string, _ [C#] _
_ it's going
to slide up to the major 3rd [G] of [F#] the 4 chord, which is going to be _ C sharp.
[A] So that's the
4th fret, 5th string.
So now we've got this.
[B] _ _ [D] _ _ [B] _ _ _ [C#] _
_ _ _ Alright?
[B] And then from there, [C#m] _ _ we're going
to [D#] swing, you want to do [G#] that, make that [C#m] slide, I usually do it with my middle finger. _
But
then you want to get your index finger ready to do [F] a bend on the 3rd fret, 2nd string.
[D] _ [Em] _ _ So it goes [G] like this. _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ [B] _ _ [G] _ _
[B] _ [A] _ [G] _ [E] _ That's the move we're going to try to [G] get here.
[A] _ [A#] _ [B] _ [A] _ _ _ [B] _ [D] _
[B] So _ [C#] _ [D] _ [Em] _ _ [G]
bend up on that
3rd fret, 2nd string, _ [Em] _
then open E, [Gm] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
[G] _ [Em] _ _ so now we've got [A] this. _
[B] _ [D] _ _ _ [B] _ _ [C#] _ [G] _
[Em] _ _ _ Then we're going to [B] go, _
[G] _ [E] _ _ _ _ [A] _ [B] _ [D] _
_ [B] _ _ [C#] _ [G] _ _ [Cm] _ _
[E] _ _ so
we've [B] got _ _ open, _ [G] _ _ [Em] _ [A#] excuse me, bend, 3rd fret, [Em] 2nd string, _ open E, and then we're going to
do [B] chromatic from the 4th fret on the 3rd string, _ [A#] _ _ _
3rd fret, 3rd string, _ [A] _ _ _ _
2nd fret, 3rd
string, _ then [G] open, _ _ _ _ _ [G#] 3rd string, [G] and then we're going [G#m] to hammer on, hammer on the 1st fret, _ _
same string, [Em] and then do an open E string.
So it's going to go like this.

[G] it goes
like this.
