[Am] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ Okay, so here we start off _ with a little pickup and we land right on the 6th of C for the
downbeat of the tune.
_ And what's cool about this is, you know, we have this real standard [Ab] sort of blues boogie
woogie [C] thing _ [A] _ _
_ [Dbm] _ and we're playing with some jazzier notes that kind of really grab the ear, particularly
when we're landing on them, you know, in very, you know, on the downbeat of _ the chord.
So we start [Eb] off with, [C] _
[Cm] _ right, so it's just sort of a C major _ arpeggio, _ [Ab] but we're landing on
that [Am] 6th, which is the A.
_ And then we slide in [Cm] here and we have this series of three bends
on the flat 3 and we're kind of bending it only a quarter tone, _ _ _ [Ab] you know.
[Eb] I'm not bending
it all the [A] way up _ [E] to the major 3rd.
I want the minor 3rd somewhere in between because
it's kind of dirty sounding.
[C] _ _ _ _ [Cm] _ _ [Am] _ _
[G] _ And then we have this [Am] hammer-on pull-off _ [Cm] _ that outlines, you
know, picks up some cool [Fm] jazzy chord tones, the [Am] 9, _ 6, [Em] to the 5.
[C] And then _ [Bbm] _ _ [Eb] _ _ [A] _ _ _
[Bb] this line that
takes us _ through the dominant 7 [A] [G] to [Cm] _ _ [A] _
the [Cm] major 3rd, [A] _ which is A, of the 4 chord.
So it's a
bit of a long line.
Let me play it through [Eb] for you slowly _ and we'll _ _ look at it one last
time.
[C] _ _ _ _ _
_ [Cm] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Bbm] _
_ _ [Cm] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _
[B] Okay, so that takes [A] us all the way from the 1 to the 4 chord, landing _ on the major
3rd of the 4 chord, which is A, [Cm] _ major 3rd of F.
[E] So it's all about targeting chord [A] tones
here.
It's all about landing on the 6 when we begin _ and weaving in and out.
We're weaving
in, we're [Cm] weaving, _ we got minor here, minor [A] 3rd, we [G] got some jazzy licks, got [Am] 9, _ [G] 6, and
then [Bb] _
dominant 7, [E] _ [Bbm] _ _ [Eb] _ and then this hammer-on from the minor 3rd to the major 3rd.
[Cm] _
[A] _ _ And then we
just [C] walk [A] down into the [Cm] major 3rd of the F.
_ _ I just wanted to point something out.
I think
this _ _ is a key kind of, this hammer-on pull-off from major 3rd to minor 3rd is a key kind
of sound in this style.
_ _ [A] _ _ [Fm] So you may just want to play with [Cm] that a minute. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ Okay? _
[Cm] _ _ [A] And then
for the 4 chord, we have this little double stop _ [Am] _ _ [E] _ _ _
_ and [Bbm] the tune is moving so quick, we're
back _ _ on the 7 of the 1 by the time that lick is over.
So all that [A] is is _ _ _ _ [D] this, which is
outlining [A] the strong tones of F7, which is A [Eb] and E flat, which is the major 3rd and [A] the
dominant 7. _ _ _
Little bend.
_ You don't want to bend too [Ebm] much.
[A] Sound weird.
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ And landing again
on that [C] dominant 7 of C.
_ And then [Eb] we bring it home [Cm] with, _ _ [C] _ _ [G] _ _ [Eb] _
[C] _ _ [Cm] _ [Am] _ _ _ [C] so what we have there is we're
[Dm] playing _ [Cm] through the [C] 5, 4, 1 changes.
[Cm] _ _ [E] _ _
And that first lick _ is _ a kind of a quarter step bend
[C] on the E flat to [F] E, which is, [Bbm]
you know, if we're thinking of the G chord, [F] it's kind of
an altered sound.
[G] _ _ It's a sharp [F] 5 of G, [Dm] right?
Because in a G9, _ [Gm] the high E string is the
5 [F] and we're adding the sharp 5, which again is kind of an outside _ tone.
But it's also
right within the blues box of C, so _ _ that's where we're [A] getting it from.
[Cm] _ _ _ [Am] _ _ [C] _ _
[Cm] And then for
the 4, [G] _ _ _ [Eb] _
[C] [Ab] we're just walking down.
At this point, [Cm] I'm kind of thinking of _ the blues box.
I'm
not really thinking too much of an F7 chord, although it really does outline an F7 [C] chord
well.
[A] _ _ _
You know, because [F] here's our _ F7 arpeggio here _ and we're just walking down [C] from the
5 [Gm]
to the [A] 4 to the 3 [Db] to the 2.
[F]
And then there's the root of F.
_ _ _ [A] _
[F] _ [Cm] _ [C] _ And then we're bringing it
back [Eb] home, just minor 3rd of [E] C to major [C] 3rd, root, [Cm] _ [Am] _ _ and tag it again with that.
[Eb] So let me
play through the whole thing slowly so you can follow along.
Here we go.
_ [C] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ [C] _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ [Cm] _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ _ _ [C] _ [A] _ [C] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Cm] _ _
[Am] _ _ [C] _ [Bbm] _ _ [Eb] _ [C] _ _
[Cm] _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _ _
In chorus 2, we're going to look at some T-bone style chromatic licks and we're also going
to move up to a higher
