Here's a little box pattern that I've gotten a lot of use out of and still do.
today, I'll be doing this in the key of A, but it can be moved all over the place,
which is nice.
I'm gonna start with a simple pattern [A] again.
[Gm]
[A] [Em]
[A] [G]
[A] [G]
[A] So I'm starting this on the eighth fret,
first string, and [G]
[A] [C] of course you can go up.
[Am] [Cm] [G]
[D] This is your basic minor pentatonic scale.
If I was to improvise just using those notes, it would sound something like this.
[Ab] [D] [C]
[Gm] [Ab]
Okay, now if we want to add some color tones,
this note
on the A string,
sixth fret, D string, sixth fret.
And [D] watch what happens when I add those.
[A] [Eb]
[A] [Ab] [C]
[A] Okay, again.
[G] [Eb] Now [Ab] [G] if I improvise using those notes, I have a lot [N] more choices.
[D]
[Gm] [A]
And one thing I like to do is take those color tones and slide up to the
first notes in the scale I showed you.
So from the sixth fret up to the seventh, [C] you can [Ab] create a lick from that too.
Sliding also sixth fret D string up to the root note, which is the A up here.
[D]
[Cm] Of course, you see I'm using a lot of slides and hammer-ons to make it sound [Ab] a little more [A] expressive.
[Cm] Now you'll see I tend to use my pinky
when I shouldn't.
You [Gb] should really use your ring finger on this note, but I tend to use my pinky more [Ab] often than not.
[Dm] [Ab] [A] Another slide note, which was not part of the scale or the
scale with the color tones, is to take this C note, which is the minor third [Db] and
slide it up to the major.
[Am] That's a cool lick.
I'm sliding [Db] from the C, [A] C sharp,
then hitting the root note.
So these two are your roots [Ab] in this pattern.
[A]
[G] [A] [Ab] [D]
[Ab] [C] You could [Ab] also do that lick down here.
[A]
So this pattern can be moved around because [G] it's on three strings.
I could start here,
[D] [Ab] D, I could start [Bb] here, I have G, [Gb] [G] and
today, I'll be doing this in the key of A, but it can be moved all over the place,
which is nice.
I'm gonna start with a simple pattern [A] again.
[Gm]
