Boxcar Willie - Phantom 309 chords
Start Jamming...
[C]
I was out on the west coast trying to make a buck.
[Em] Things didn't work out and I was down on [F] my luck.
Got tired of roaming and [G] bumming around, so I started thumbing back east [C] toward my hometown.
[Em] Now I made a lot of miles the first two days and [F] I figured I'd be home in a week if my
luck held [C] out this way.
[G]
But the third night [C] out I got stranded way out of town.
I had a cold and lonely crossroads.
Rain was pouring [Em] down.
I was hungry [F] and freezing and none caught a chill when the [G] lights of a big semi topped the hill.
[C] Lord, I sure was glad to hear them air brakes [Em] come on.
And I climbed in that cab where [F] I knew it would be warm.
At the wheel [G] sat a big man.
He weighed about 210.
[C] He stuck out his hand and said with a grin, Big Joe's the name.
And I told him [Em] mine.
He said the name of my rig is [F] Phantom 309.
[G] Well I asked him why he called his rig such a name.
[C] He said, son, this old Mack can put them all to [Em] shame.
Well there ain't a driver or a rig running any [F] line that's seen nothing but tail light
from Phantom [G] 309.
[C] Well we rode and talked the better part of the night when the lights of a truck stop
came [Em] in sight.
He said, I'm sorry son, this is as far as [F] you go.
I've got to make a turn just [G] on the road.
[C] Well he tossed me a dime as he pulled her in low and [Em] said, have yourself a hot cup,
old Big Joe.
[F] When Joe and his rig roared out in the night [G] and nothing flashed, he was clean out of sight.
[C] Well I went inside and ordered me a cup and told the waiter Big Joe was a-settin' me [Em] up.
Oh, you could have heard a pin [F] drop.
It got deathly quiet.
[G] And the waiter's face turned kind of white.
[C] Well did I say something wrong?
I said with [Em] a halfway grin.
He said, nah, [F] this happens every now and then.
Every [G] driver in here knows Big Joe.
But son, let [C] me tell you what happened about ten years ago.
At the crossroads tonight where you flagged him down, [Em] there was a busload of kids coming [F] from town.
And they were right in the middle when Big [G] Joe topped the hill.
It could have been slaughter, [C] but he turned his wheels.
[Em] Well Joe lost control and went into a skid.
[F] Gave his life to save that bunch of kids.
[G] There at that crossroads was the end of the line [C] for Big Joe and Phantom 309.
But every now and then some hiker will come [Em] by.
Like you, Big Joe will give him a ride.
[F] Here, have another cup and forget about the dime.
[G] Keep it as a souvenir from Big Joe [Gm] and Phantom
