[B] He named us, Tom and me, [E] personally on [C] National [E] as subversives to American youth.
Yes!
[Am] [Em] We made the victims' [N] enemies laugh.
We're going to the Dead [F#m] of Mars.
We were dangerous.
We were dangerous [D#] guys.
We [C] [F]
[N] wrote that song and literally didn't even take it seriously.
We wrote to entertain ourselves and to make our friends laugh.
We never intended to even record it.
[E] [D#m] Melanie and I went over it really well.
Basically ran out of songs.
We did, we played it, [N] and everybody liked it.
The president of the record company says,
Oh, you guys, you get it.
So we did.
We were living in Kansas City, flying around the country,
doing shows and flying back and forth.
And so we did, we recorded it.
The next thing we know, they decided to release it as a single.
Well, in those days, a single couldn't be more than three minutes and ten seconds long.
So, [D#m] in the song, we had to edit out the last verse.
[G] And this wasn't in the days of digital technology where today,
you know, you just push a button and problem [F] solved.
We [D#m] literally had to cut the tape.
We had to mark it with a piece of chalk and slice it with a razor blade
and hope we got it right because [Am] we only got one shot.
[N] And if we didn't get it right, we had to re-record the entire song.
[F#m] So we got it right, but you could still hear a little something there.
What do [Am] we do, Tom?
[F#]
The cymbals flash over the little clip.
You've never heard it.
And to this day, I [D#] can hear it too.
Now you guys probably will too next time you're [G] listening.
Well, at the same time Nixon was trying his very [N] best to ban our song,
Lawrence Welk performed it on the water.
[F#] He really did.
[G] Dale [C] and Gail sang it.
And Mr.
Welk, conducting the champagne music makers,
referred to him as a modern day spiritual.
[E]
[F#] Well, it was gospel [F#m] to us.
Well, we were in London at the time, so we didn't see it.
We didn't even believe it.
We'd kind of be kidding.
Lawrence Welk,
[C] oh yes, he did.
[D#m]
So if you haven't seen it, check it out.
It's [A] called Totin' with Lawrence Welk.
It's ricky [G] funny.
And when you watch it, think about this.
This is [N] about as bizarre as our life truly is.
Now, Lawrence Welk is performing our song
at the same time the Grateful Dead started stealing it.
So he wasn't the only guy on the planet
who ever wrote a song performed simultaneously by Lawrence Welk and Jerry Garfield.
How do you like it?
I think [G] there are people who are already looking at that on YouTube [F#m] right now.
I think it's already had like a [D#m] million hits or something.
Anyway, we'd [Gm] like to dedicate
[G]
[F] [F#m] it.
Back in the days when there were bees.
And the bees [G] died in the South California.
We did name Nixon personally on that one.
[Gm] You remember Jerry when we asked him to play?
[N] What kind of chemistry do you have down in your [G] studio?
Well, we wrote the song with a string of lawns.
Do you remember?
[Cm] Yes, but I was never [G] feeling it.

[A] [C] [G]
Do you love [C] [G] me?
[A] I've been changing [C] and you can [D] plainly see.
[G] I've known the joy and learned about the [C] pain.
And my [G] mama said [Em] if I didn't you'd be making [C] part of me.
[D] But she was trying to get it and [G] now I'm one choke over the line.
Street, [C] Jesus, one joke over [G] the line.
Sitting [Em] downtown in a railway [A] [C] station,
one [G] joke over the line.
Waiting for a train that goes home sweet and [C] merry,
hoping that the train [G] is on time.
Sitting [Em] downtown in a [A] railway [C] station,
one joke [G] over the line.
I've sailed away [C] a hundred [G]
miles,
and [Em] now I'm [A]
returning,
[C] and you're on [D] my smile.
[G] I met all the girls and I love myself to [C] you,
and I'm not [G] surprised.
[Em] Like everything else that I've been [D] through,
it opened up my eyes,
and now [G] I'm one joke over the line.
Street, [C] Jesus, one joke [G] over the line.
Sitting [Em] downtown in a railway [A] [C] station,
one joke [G] over the line.
Waiting for a train that goes home sweet and [C] merry,
hoping that the [G] train is on time.
Sitting downtown [Em] in a railway [A] [C] station,
one [G] joke over the line.
One joke over the,
[C] [G]
[Em]
[A] [C] [D] [G]
Waiting for a train that goes home sweet and [C] merry,
hoping that the [G] train is on time.
Seven miles [Em] an hour in a railway station,
[C] one [G] joke over the line.
I wanna be one joke over the line
[C] One joke over [G] the line
Down [Em] town near the [A] railway [C] station
One [G] joke over the line
Down
[C] [G]
[Em] town near the [A] railway [C] station
[G] One joke over the line
Sitting [Em] downtown in a railway [A] station
[C] One [G] toe for the light, one [C] toe, one [G] toe for the light.
[D] [E] All right, [B] I'm gonna have you in [D] here just a moment.
Here we go, here we go.
Hey, everybody here is [C#] talking.
Woo!
