[G#] Hello Sunshine by Bruce Springsteen is going to be played in standard tuning and is capoed
on the second fret, being played out of C formation.
The reason [A] that I settled on it being played out of C [E] formation, and there's no video of
him playing this so I'm having to speculate, but I can hear
[F#] that hammer-on right there taking place.
And the [Am]
only area of the fretboard that it makes sense to be [D] doing that in the rhythm
that's getting [E] played and in the progression that's getting [D] played is out [E] of [F#] [Em] a C formation.
So I'm capoing second fret and playing [D] in C formation, [F#m] which puts the key in the key
of a D, which is the key of the song.
[D]
And the chords will be a C major, the way [C] that I'm making this C major is a four fingered
C major, I've got my ring finger on the sixth [Am] string relative third fret, so I'm pretending
like my capo is the nut and going 1, 2, 3, and I'll be referring to relative to the nut
the fret, so third fret, sixth finger, ring finger, sixth string, ring finger.
[D] Pinky finger to the fifth string, third fret, second finger to the fourth string, [F#m] second
fret, open third string, first finger on the second [D] string, first fret, open first string.
So that's your first chord.
[A] And the rhythm, [B]
[Fm] that's [Em] the rhythm that is taking place across the whole song, it's kind
of a quick choppy rhythm.
[N] It's a down, down, up, down, up, down, up, down, that's going on very slowly.
[B]
[E] [D]
And inside of that [G] C, you can hear him at times lift up the ring finger, not ring [E] finger,
lift up the second finger to expose the open fourth string, and [D] then hammer that down with
the second finger to the fourth string, second fret.
Also, a lot of the strumming seems to be emphasizing the lower strings in [A] a very kind of [D] sloppy
manner in a lot of ways, intentionally sloppy, but just kind of loose strumming on the lower strings.
The second [Am] chord is going to be an F chord, no it's not.
The [Em] second chord is going to be a D minor chord.
So the way that you're going to play this D minor is you'll go with your second finger
[B] to the third string, second fret, [Em] pinky finger to the second string, third fret, first finger
to the first string, first fret.
And this D minor is really getting carried more by the bass than the guitar.
To me it [B] sounds like Bruce Springsteen is just strumming strings five, [E] [B] four, and three
in this D [E] chord.
But because the bass is making [Em] it a D minor, I'm assuming that he's probably also fretting
these other D minor notes inside of the chord, but that they're just not really coming through
in his strumming.
[D] Then it goes back to the C.
And the verse is going to alternate that way between the
C and the D minor [A] until we [G] come to an F, will be the next [D] chord that happens that is new
in the switch.
We move from a [G] C to an F.
The way that you move to that F [N] is out of the C, you will shift
your ring and pinky fingers just down one set of strings.
So now your ring finger is on the fifth string, third fret, [D] pinky finger on the fourth string,
third fret, second finger moving to the third string, second fret, first finger remaining
planted where it was in the C on the second string, first fret, and then grab with [Em] your
thumb the sixth string, [G] first fret.
And that's your F chord.
It also sounds like in the F chord that Bruce is lifting up his second finger, exposing
the open third string, and then hammering back down into the third string, second fret
with his second finger.
And that is the song that repeats over and over.
It goes out of that F [D] back to the C chord, and [Em] then back up to the D minor chord, and
then back [D] to the C chord where it drones on that rhythm.
[C] At the very end of the song, there is one last chord change that comes in.
And that is this relative, [Em] I guess you'd call it an A sharp or [C] a B flat.
The way that it's being made [D] is after the C chord, [N] you will bar with your pinky finger,
and this is kind of a difficult chord to make, but bar with your pinky finger across the
third fret of [Em] strings [C] four, three, and two.
And then with your first finger, [Em] bar the first fret of [G] strings six and [C] five.
So that's your chord that you're rhythming over.
[G] Then it goes to the F chord, and then back into [A] the C chord.
[D] [C]
[G]
[D]
And after that C chord, I think it repeats back [F] to [G] maybe the F chord, [D]
back to the C,
[Em] then maybe back to the D minor.
But those are the chords and movements [B] to Hello Sunshine by Bruce Springsteen.
Playing along with the recorded version would be good [Gm] to [D] learn [C] how the movements [E] come and
the meters in which they come, but
