[A] A lot of people, this is like the consummate example of what [D]
contest-style [N] fiddling is.
A man by the name of Eck [A] Robertson, anybody ever heard of him?
[Dm] Recorded this in 1922.
It's called Sally Gooden.
Basically only has two parts, [G] but he and I'm sure others, but he was the first person to document [Am] this in 1922 [A] on what was considered,
if you go to downtown [Am] Nashville to this day, you go to the Country Music Hall of Fame, one of the first exhibits you [Gm] come to is this exhibit.
And it tells you the story of how he trekked [A] to New York [Bb] from Texas and walked [A] in on this radio [Bb] station and the guys really liked what he [B] was doing.
[A] They said, well, come back the next day, and they went back the next day, [N] and he and a buddy of his, his name's slipping my mind.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And they recorded this tune and it's become famous, but that recording in [Bbm] 1922 was considered the first commercial country hit in [Am] America.
And I'm proud of that fact, as a fiddle player, it wasn't a vocal.
[Dm] And he recorded [N] arguably 13 parts, and over the last 80 years, certainly those variations have become canonized,
and also over the last 80 years, four or five other variations have been added, and you hear those all over the country.
No matter where you go in this country and you hear this tune, you're going to always hear at least 12 or 13 variations.
If you're in the southeast where I'm from, you're going to hear 18 to 20 [A] variations on this tune.
So it's the [C] kitchen [D] sink number when you're wanting to compete.
If you want to show them everything, this is a great one.
Sally Gooden.
Had a piece [A] of pie, had [C] a piece of pudding, [B] gave it all away, and [Dm] meets Sally Gooden.
