Been getting a lot of requests for Dave Matthews, and I was teaching this one to a live student _
And I was thinking to myself.
They'd be great to
_ to make a video
_ _ So we're gonna do this grave digger
And I just want to go through some of the chords first
And then we'll you know maybe try and spice up a little rhythm basically we've got three parts.
We've got a verse
And then we've got a chorus, and then we've got a thing that we can call a bridge or a second chorus
Which is where he's singing about ring around the Rosie
_ So let's start with the very first part the verse
_ He [C] actually just starts on an [Am] a minor chord
_ But _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ the one thing he does is he takes his index finger off the a minor chord
And he hammers it on to that first fret of the B string
Quite frequently there in the beginning like he starts with it off actually like _
_ _ [Abm] _ [Am] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ So [E] that you know it's just a nice little [Am] embellishment
But it's just based off a minor chord and you can kind of hammer that on
So we've got that though, and then when the singing comes in on the verse we got a minor
_ For _ _ _ _ _ _ one measure [Em] which means four counts, and then we're gonna take our pinky
_ _ And we're gonna put it onto the third fret of the E string right here
And I noticed Dave Matthews actually takes his index finger off when he does that
_ _ _ _ _ _ But
We [B] can still we'll call that a minor _ over G a minor slash G
[Am] So we have a minor for one measure _ _ _ _ _ a minor over [Em] G _ for one measure _ _ _
_ _ _ Then he [B] plays a full F [F] major bar chord and _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
then back to an a [Am] minor again _
Then _ _ _ _ _ it starts over on that a minor _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _ _

Hang in there here comes the chorus, and it's it's not too bad starts actually the same way _ _ _ _

the first two chords are the exact same [A] thing you know he just
_ _ Ramps up the intense intensity a little bit, but we've got the same first two [Am] chords
_ Then _ _ _ _ [Em] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
[B] the third chord is actually an E major chord _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ check it out, [Am] so we have a minor _
_ _ _ _ [Em] over G note
_ _ E major
[E] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Not too bad, [Am] then it goes like this a minor _ and [Em] then over that G
Same first two chords of the song and it's it's a minor _ up
That over G is and it's an offbeat so if I was going one two three four
_ It's one of the it's one of the offbeats of that so it's like a minor _ G
_ Down so just listen to it a minor _ [D] G
[Am] Just _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ like that _
[B] Then [Gb] a D chord
_ With _ an F sharp in the bass now Dave Matthews plays it like this
Takes his middle finger, and he puts it on the second fret of the E string _ _
[N] Then he takes his ring finger, and he puts it on the second fret of the G string _ [A]
and _ _ _ _ _ then his [D] pinky _ on
the third fret of the B string like this _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [G] I
Play that voicing sometimes I on this song.
It's actually easier for me to think of a regular D major chord _ _ and
Not even worry about the high E string my middle fingers.
Just not even doing anything the high E is basically muted
[Em] _ _ _
by my hand and then _ I
Wrap my left thumb around the second fret of the E string so the whole course will look like [Am] this a minor _ _ _ _ _
[Em] over a G note
_ then a E major [E] _ _ a _ _ _
_ [Am] _ [A] minor over G then [D] the
_ F _ sharp in the bass [Am] and again _ _ _ _ _
_ [Em] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Am] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ So that's the chorus those are the first two parts, and they're you know they're very they're very similar to each other _ and
Rhythmically you can kind of focus on the same thing okay, so then the last part the ring around the Rosie
_ _ _ Basically we need a D minor chord.
I'll just give you the chords in the right order D minor _ [Dm] then _ _ _ _ _ _ [B] another one of those F [F] bar chords
_ _ _ And _ _ _ if you look at this F bar chord my ring finger is already where it needs to be for a C major chord [G] _ [C] _ and _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
real quickly a [G] G major _ and
_ _ _ a B flat a
B flat major chord or a B flat power chord we're gonna do it like this
_ index finger on the first fret of the a [Bb] string _ _
_ ring finger on the third fret of the D string _ _ _ _
Pinky on the third fret of the G string _
Those are the only three notes we should hear [C] and it's gonna be really quick the G to the B flats really quick check it [Dm] out
