[G]
[N] I wasn't sure how it was going to work.
I was nervous as a kitten.
I had a dry mouth, I was pacing around backstage.
And to stand backstage [B] and hear the band that I had formed
[A]
playing songs that I'd [F] helped to write
[D] with a different keyboard player [Am] was the most complex of emotions
that were flying around.
And then when I got
you know, we'd arranged that there was a blackout
and [Eb] Don and I would change places and then suddenly I'd be there
and I started Perfect Strangers not really knowing what to expect
but the volume of noise from the audience, I couldn't hear that hammer.
[Ab] [N]
[C]
[D] [F]
[G] [Dm] And [A] one of those things [G] welled up in me, you know,
that [Dm] sometimes you just can't stop.
And I was in tears, I had a lump in my throat
that I couldn't quite swallow down.
It was a marvellous, marvellous moment.
It was of my own choosing, I mean I was leaving the band by my own volition
and yet I didn't want to at that moment.
And each time when it got to another number I'd play
and I'd think, well I'm never going to play that again.
And then I heard Don playing Like Woman From Tokyo
and I thought, oh shit, I didn't get to play that, you know,
I'm not going to play that again.
Or whatever, those kind of silly things that go through your mind.
But then at the end of the evening when we all went to the front of the stage
to say thank you and I suddenly realised that the rest of them had stepped back
and left me on my own to take a round of applause, bless them.
[N] And I almost didn't make it off stage without just making a little fool of myself.
[Gm] [N]
[G]
[N] And I got into the dressing room and thought, well I've made it.
I'm out.
And I was in a dressing room on my own.
And I looked in the mirror and to my astonishment,
I was crying my eyes out and I didn't know I was.
It was a very, very, very emotional moment.
Hey Donny.
How are you?
You're just the kindest man.
No, I'm not really, man.
You are the kindest man.
Have I ever heard anything like some of the stuff you play?
No, I haven't.
Hey, hey.
It's time.
Bless you.
You're great.
I couldn't ask for a kinder, nicer man.
Thank you.
Thank you.
For all you've done.
Now shall there be half an hour or so before you get on that bus?
Oh, please.
I wish I was being incoherent.
I can't better say what I've got to say now.
No, you're in the middle of a conversation.
Somebody had to be doing that.
Are we playing incoherent?
This tune.
Are we playing incontinent?
Here they are.
