Welcome, where today I'm going to introduce you to the style of John Lee Hooker or as I like to call it, the Stepped Groove.
I'm not going to play anything by John Lee Hooker, I'm just going to show you how you get the kind of feel that he gets.
So I'm in standard tune, little [A] bounce,
[D] [G]
[Em] [E]
[G] strings are really rekt,
[A] [Bm] [Em]
[A] [F] it's the kind of thing [A] I'm going to do.
[E]
[A]
[N] Simple thing like that, except of course it's not simple because John Lee had a great theme on the guitar.
So let's just take a look in, let's see if I get this right today.
No, I'm not, I'm not, I'm chatting shit here.
Never got that [A] right.
[E]
Back [E] off boy.
[N]
So I'm going to take an A chord, which is the [A] long A like that.
And all we're interested in getting the sound on here is the open A string and [E] that E note and [A] that A note together.
We'll just play it within that chord like that.
[B] Now, good thing to watch at this point is the way I [F#] dampen that chord.
As I pick with this hand, [A]
[E] [F#]
[A] that's quite important.
Little movement like that.
[F#] I'm not fretting the notes [F#] because you hear that.
[G#] I'm just, [A] you know, just
[D] stroking into it [F#] like that.
Now let's check the other hand out, which is where it's going to happen.
I'll put you [A] going if we can.
What you've got now is this.
Thumb, then thumb and finger.
This is it.
This is it with [G] no feel on it at [A] all.
Now see how [Dm] as I pluck, watch this hand.
[E]
[A] [F] It's a bit like a blues art player when he cuts the harp and moves his hand out like that.
That's what [A] we're aiming for.
[N] Now, if you take a look at this hand, like I've said in the other lessons,
Imagine you've got an elastic band around your wrist attached to the guitar.
It's pulling your hand in like that on the strings.
And you're going to force your hand out by using these fingers to push on the guitar
and just arching your hand like that.
As you pull it out, it snaps back because remember, there's an imaginary elastic band.
I know this sounds like a load of bollocks, but I'm just trying to impart the way I do it.
[A] Let's go for that.
I'll try it in a straightforward time, which would be, you count one.
Sorry, you don't count there, that's space, so you go,
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
Four one's slightly longer.
[Am] Now we're going to move in with this.
[D]
[A] So we're just sliding into the fifth fret using your third finger on the E string.
[C] Third fret on the A string.
[D] Fifth [G] fret on the A string.
So you get this.
[A]
[D] [A]
[C]
[A] So that's the thumb and finger.
[E] You could actually use these two, like this.
But I personally think it's good to be just with the thumb and finger.
That's the first part to be practised.
[G#] In the second part, I'm going to put an extra beat on there
and turn it into total coons in style of John Lee.
And that's just to get you
